Is this the "Beginning of the End" for Kentucky High School Sports?

Featured Replies

Sure to start but esports will only grow and grow.

How long will it be before we have AAU E-Sports?

No way it grows enough to get rid of HS sports in the next century or so.

That’s kind of already here. The best ones are already getting paid for it.

Two different markets. The D&D kids aren’t playing strong safety right now.

Once this new generation of kids that are between a newborn and 5 years old right now are adults then I think that is when esports will travel to new heights. They will grow up in an age where technology is more important than physical activity. How they influence their kids will be interesting.

I don’t know about you but the idea of this scares the living hell out of me.

I am intrigued but not scared yet. Where technology is going to be 25 years from now is going to be insane.

Yep. We can't even imagine how ridiculous technology will be by then.

Technology may do your exercise for you as you rest or sleep. Wake up in shape.

E-sports are expensive like any other sports. Have you ever bought a gaming console for you or your kids? You need TV's, controllers, games, headsets, consoles, etc.

No I haven't. My kids played outside, and did sports, and go fishing, and create their own fun.

Btw, what is the definition of "sport" because I think I am on a different page than anyone else in this thread who thinks gaming is a sport. (sarcasm emoji goes here but I couldn't find it and I'm in a hurry).

Dropping the "get off my lawn" tone of my previous post...

I don't get the idea that athletes may prefer to sit on their duff and twitch their thumbs.

Breaking it down to an analogy I can relate to from my generation...

Would I rather play Pacman of go to the Golden Corral? You can bet your sweet bippy, my behind is at the all-you-can-eat buffet.

While gaming doesn’t fall into the traditional meaning of sports it does fall into the technical definition of sports.

Sport (British English) or Sports (American English) includes all forms of competitive physical activity or games which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing enjoyment to participants, and in some cases, entertainment for spectators.

I definitely understand how gaming(esports) rubs people the wrong way when it comes to sports. The generations before me prefer that kids be outside playing games. Slowly but surely those days are coming to an end and truthfully in 100 years or so they will come to an end. I think sports will look markedly different once we get to the years of 2300 and beyond.

This was sent to me today and I am told it is authentic (if it is some type of joke please contact me immediately at: [email protected]).

I have to wonder if this is the beginning of the end for Kentucky High School Sports.

Subject: E-Sports

Teachers,

KHSAA plans to add "e-sports" competitions. Long story short, online gaming, only 1 game is approved at this point, League of Legends. The game allows for "significant team vs. team strategy and is incredibly popular in the gaming world."

I send this to you because we would be looking for a volunteer sponsor for this activity should we choose to offer it. It would not be a paid position at this time, but would most likely be a paid "coaching" position next year.

If you have interest in being a coach for e-sports, please let me know. I can send you additional information.

Upon further thought and seeing my thoughts on this subject written down I guess in some way it could be the beginning of the end for outdoor sports but I think that is something that will happen nationwide/worldwide and not so much just Kentucky.

The definition above excludes gaming from being a sport because it is not a physical activity and it does not "aim to use, maintain, or improve physical ability and skills." Twiddling or twitching one's thumbs does not count as physical activity. I am typing on my computer keyboard using as much physical activity as is necessary in gaming. Typing is not a sport and not only because it isn't for entertainment. Calling gaming a sport stretches the definition of the word until it is unrecognizable.

:lol2: It's obvious you've never played video games.

There’s a reason that it is called “e”sports and not sports. Once you add that “e” on the front of it then when you add “sports” behind the “e” it becomes crystal clear the intent behind the use of the word “sports” in “esports”.

Just because you don’t think it is a sport doesn’t mean it isn’t. Just because I don’t think golf or baseball aren’t sports doesn’t mean they aren’t.

And no. Typing on your keyboard doesn’t come close to the physical action needed for gaming.
