Reds hire David Bell as Manager

Featured Replies

Until the pitching and some other matters are solidified does it really matter who the manager is ?

I'm not sure how I feel about this hire right now. I kind of agree with 4 Quarters, if the Redlegs don't do something with at least the pitching, Bell will just be another name at the helm with his hands tied.

Does anyone think a manager makes that much of a difference? I would say it is 90% about the talent on your roster. Name who you think is the best manager in baseball right now. The Reds would have lost 90+ games this year if that guy was the manager.

At best, a great manager is worth a game a month.

Just from watching/following the Red Sox day in, day out Cora made a huge difference. He took a 2 time division champ and took them to a whole different level.

Same roster? No player changes at all?

I think it matters a heck of a lot more in the playoffs.

I like the hire. Was actually surprised we didn't hear more about him when he first interviewed.

From the things I’ve read, I think he’ll be a good manager. However, the fact his dad is a member of the Reds’ front office and he gets the job just leaves me with a funny feeling.

Is he a placeholder for the rebuild? Or will he be apart of the rebuild?

Where he managed circles around Boone. But it was a totally different vibe around the team all season and a lot different approach offensively.

They obviously added Martinez but their entire offense approach changed. You'd have to follow them to really see the difference in how they carried themselves and the style that they played. He used his bench and bullpen much better than Farrell. It was really on display in the 2 playoff series so far. He managed circles around Boone in the ALDS.

The Cardinals looked a lot better when Matheny was fired and replaced work Shildt.

Talking to Bob Castellini, I asked if there would be 'record' payroll next year and he said 'Absolutely.' Mentioned it wouldn't be a small number. Also asked about free agency, trades. He answered only, 'we're going to get the pitching.' He said that several times to several q's

You Reds' fans better hope he doesn't hire Mike Matheny to help him. As a Cardinal fan, I hope that you do.

A lot of this depends on who he hires for his staff, especially pitching coach and bench coach. An experienced mind as a bench coach can make Bell look like a genius. Don Zimmer did this for years in New York with Joe Torre. The Reds have some good young arms and the pitching coach can help him figure out how to handle the bullpen
