Cincinnati Reds Offseason

Recommended Posts

Now that the season is over, lets have some discussion on what the Reds should or should not do in the offseason.

First of all, they need to find a manager though I do think that Riggleman was better than his predecessor, he is not the answer.

Two, move away from Billy Hamilton. They can lose just as many games with him as they can without him. He is a total liability at the plate and has not gotten any better over the last 2 or 3 years.

Need to make a decision on Senzel and get his bat in the lineup a minimum of 5 days a week whether it be in the infield or the outfield.

Jesse Winker needs to play everyday in one of the corner outfield spots.

Phillip Ervin is outfielder # 4 and I do not waste time trying to find someone else.

Curious to hear the thoughts of others on this subject.

You move on from Billy. Plug Ervin in CF next season until Trammell is ready in 2020.

You either trade Scooter (which is the smart move IMO), or you move Senzel in a deal if you resign Scooter. Don't think that'd be smart, but you have to do one or the other.

Focus 100% on upgrading the rotation. You've got a solid #3 in Castillo, and a solid #5 in Disco. Gotta add a couple of guys for the top of the rotation. Bullpen seems to be okay with Lorenzen, Garrett, Iglesias, Hernandez, and Hughes. Probably throw Cody Reed in there too.

Starting pitching definitely has to be at the top of the list. Castillo looks to have the potential to be a middle of the rotation guy like you said and Disco can be a passable 4-5. From the in-house candidates: Mahle showed flashes of a 4-5 guy as well. How about Lorenzen as a possible starter? I didn't watch him enough to see if his repertoire could play in the rotation. His ERA looked good in his 3 starts but his peripherals weren't the best. This is a place that they absolutely have to improve. Their starters were 28th in baseball in WAR.

Also like you said the outfield has to improve. Billy's defense is not worth the damage that he does to the offense--particularly in a bandbox like GABP. The outfield was 26th in WAR last season and a big reason that overall the offense was slightly below average in runs scored. That's unacceptable hitting in the park that they hit in. While their average and OBP trended in the right direction they just didn't have enough pop. Their slugging was 19th which led them to be 3rd in runners left on base. The 2 teams that finished ahead of them in that category finished in the top 10 in runs scored... the Reds were only 18th.

Lots of places to improve.
