What impact does the running clock have on the game?

Kids practice for weeks to get to play 10 reg. season games in football. Why shorten it for the ones that work in practice because the other team sucks?

I've never heard a player on a winning team complain about winning with a running clock.

I'm all for running the score up. But I'm also for shortening the game when possible. Nobody benefits from those garbage minutes.

Garbage minutes??? Ask the kids that don't see the field if they are garbage minutes, or ask Mom and Dad or Grandma or Grandpa is those are garbage minutes when their son or daughter gets in. It's not Division 1 college we are talking about here.

If they kids are that excited about getting in, I'm sure they are just glad they have the opportunity and not worried about the running clock rule.

I couldn't care less what Mom, Dad, Grandma or Grandpa think.

You must have been a coach at one time...LOL

I have witnessed Seniors playing JV, just recently. Also, some kids do not have the choice to play somewhere else

I've seen Seniors play JV many times. Generally, it's kids who were a year or two behind the curve physically.

I don't have a problem with it for those kids to finally get some reps instead of standing on the sideline their whole time in high school.

I've also seen several at schools around here who were just getting good enough to play JV their Senior year and they declined that option.

I haven't, not yet anyway.

Parent interaction is probably the worst thing about youth/high school sports.

I am thinking more of a straight shooter.

Agree 100 percent there

I am thinking more of a straight shooter.

Sometimes that get's you in trouble, it has me many times :ohbrother:

I'd rather be "in trouble" for being a straight shooter, than praised for being a liar. :thumb:

I can't remember that. I remember Pulaski County and Waggoner going like 80something to 60something. Would like to look that comeback up if I can.

I was at that game in '03, and it never remotely threatened becoming a running clock game. I think Waggener's largest lead was 3TDs, but it might have been 4.

Waggener had the quick-strike offense and S/T with Alfonso Smith leading the way, and they got off to a very good start with PC having a couple early miscues. Pulaski was much bigger and deeper, though, and just wore the Wildcats down as things went on. 82-68 was the final score.

Then I can't really think of what the game is that Plantman is referring to in the KHSAA playoffs.

The kids going in during a running clock know why they're getting in. They know they aren't going to make a game winning play at the last second.

Most reserves in these situations go in either hoping to expand the lead, or make it more respectable. They know they aren't single handedly winning a championship.

While we are on the subject:

What is everyone's thoughts on the team who is losing that leaves their Starters in and start's "Touchdown Hunting". Meaning they start purposely calling plays designed for explosive gains or to try and create turnovers on Defense.

It is one of my biggest gripes, to see a team losing 46-14 at the start of the 4th who suddenly has Seniors chucking post patterns against 3rd string Freshman Corners or who have their Starting Defense blitzing to try and create a fumbled exchange when they were not trying those things earlier in the game.

If a team is running their base Offense or running a base Defense with their starters, It still isn't the best form, but I can live with that, When teams try to exploit the fact they have upperclassmen vs. Sophomores and Freshman reserves, I think that is low brow.

Most kids and parents who are in that situation know that running clock time is garbage minutes. And if they are the type to complain about playing time, they will complain about only getting garbage minutes. And not having a running clock, doesn’t change the fact that those minutes are garbage time. As a coach, even if there wasn’t a running clock, I’d be trying to run those blowout minutes down as fast as I could.
