What impact does the running clock have on the game?

Featured Replies

As a former player in the 45 point running clock era. I know for a fact the starters all worked as hard as possible to get it to a running clock because we knew that we would get home earlier but that we also would allow our teammates who work just as hard as we did to get some playing time. Even if it is a shortened game. We loved seeing our 2nd string guys and JV scoring and getting defensive stops in a varsity game.

I mean, I guess it's unfortunate that seniors don't get to play on varsity to some degree, but if they are truly worried about playing time, go play somewhere else.

I agree, seniors shouldn't play JV. I'm not even sure that's allowed.

There is NO bylaw in ANY KHSAA sport banning a senior from playing JV.

None.

Okay. That’s why I said I wasn’t sure.

In my 18 years of doing this, I have yet to have any kid in any sport tell me, "You know, getting to play varsity as a third-string freshman in the annual blowout of Podunkerton really helped my development."

Game reps are game reps. I doubt any coach gets upset when his young guys get in the game.

Then I can't really think of what the game is that Plantman is referring to in the KHSAA playoffs.

There wasn’t one. Warren Central and Lexington Catholic both came close but no team has ever had a running clock put on them and they came back to win. Seems like that is something we’d all remember vividly.

I think Warren Central and LexCath have come the closest but offhand I am pretty sure it has never happened.

I'm pretty sure Warren Central and LexCath almost did it against the program.

2013 LexCath got to within one score against Highlands in the semi-finals after the game went to running clock early, in part due to two early turnovers by LexCath.

It took having a pass-oriented offense that could generate over 350 yards of passing against a more than solid Bluebird defense to do this. David Bouvier, who will start this weekend for UK, had 3 catches for TDs in that game.

While we are on the subject:

What is everyone's thoughts on the team who is losing that leaves their Starters in and start's "Touchdown Hunting". Meaning they start purposely calling plays designed for explosive gains or to try and create turnovers on Defense.

It is one of my biggest gripes, to see a team losing 46-14 at the start of the 4th who suddenly has Seniors chucking post patterns against 3rd string Freshman Corners or who have their Starting Defense blitzing to try and create a fumbled exchange when they were not trying those things earlier in the game.

If a team is running their base Offense or running a base Defense with their starters, It still isn't the best form, but I can live with that, When teams try to exploit the fact they have upperclassmen vs. Sophomores and Freshman reserves, I think that is low brow.

As a Coach, I don't put my 2's and 3's in until the team that is getting beat puts theirs in. When they wave the white flag, we will.
