Larry Linville
They did, but there were 3 of them, so a weekday is getting hit somewhere. BTW this cant be an argument when basketball misses most of a whole week for its state tournament. Run 2 meets on Saturday. It's been done in the past. And I think is ludicrous that basketball teams miss almost an entire week of school.
Jumper_Dad
Or track goes back to a non classified event and you only need one day to complete it. Nobody seems to mind when all the other sports miss days of school for state tournaments. They would if it was during finals or AP testing. State tournament happens in the middle of a semester, football finals are a couple of weeks prior to the end of the first semester and baseball state is after school is out. ColonelCrazy
Bashing the KHSAA for this is fine if you dont understand the larger scope of the picture. The conflict makes it apparent that the KHSAA doesn't understand the "larger scope of the picture." The KHSAA's Mission Statement: "To provide governance and leadership in order to regulate and progressively administer the highest quality interscholastic sports and sport-activities in an efficient manner, and promote the values of participation for all involved in education-based athletics and school-based sports. The KHSAA will work collaboratively with its member schools to recognize and promote the primary focus of high school academic success and college and career readiness for the student participants, risk minimization for all participants in the programs, and the efficient administration of the education-based athletic program in the schools." The KHSAA failed its student-athletes here.
TheDeuce
Sounds like a good problem to have, IMO. I wonder how many chose to compete versus how many took the tests.
plantmanky
Sounds like a good problem to have, IMO. I wonder how many chose to compete versus how many took the tests. tcjkbt
If a student can get the college tuition for a semester or two or three knocked off because of AP tests, then you're talking about a pretty significant financial inducement to a family to have the kid miss the state meet. 75center
Can track be moved to after school is out as baseball does?
plantmanky
Can track be moved to after school is out as baseball does? Not until after 2019 when the contract is up. The issue in moving is you deal with Memorial Day weekend, and Graduations, then if you get too late, State Baseball. Track is a sport where it's possible the athlete is also in another spring sport, that's why it has always been pair with tennis Championships at the same time. TheDeuce
On the surface and with no knowledge of the situation, it seems like it would be much easier to move the test dates than a state track meet.

rjs4470
As said earlier the test dates are set nationally. The states have no say when they are. And the State Championship dates are set several years in advance because the venues have to be reserved. Avoiding this conflict is likely pretty close to impossible. The KHSAA probably doesn't know years in advance when the AP tests are when the contracts for the venues are negotiated. The AP folks aren't going to take the time to find out the state tourney's/championships for all sport in all 50 states (which trying to avoid would be impossible anyway). It's unfortunate that there are those who might have to choose one over the other, but I don't think there's much either the KHSAA or whoever runs the AP tests could do about it. Jumper_Dad
According to the KHSAA schedule, it takes about 5 hours to complete each classes state championship for Track and Field. I'd think that back to back Saturdays would work fine. Currently 1A and 2A are on Thursday and Friday with the first event starting at 4:00 and the last event starts at 8:55. 3A is on Saturday starting at 10:00 with the last event starting at 2:55. You could have two classes at UK and one at Louisville or visa-versa.
gchs_uk9
How many kids did this affect? A state track event brings hundreds (thousands?) of kids to compete over the course of the weekend. I'm guessing a small percentage were involved in AP classes and an even smaller percentage were involved in the AP tests for those specific days. The KHSAA is in a no-win situation here where any changes runs conflict to other sporting events, graduations, and venue availability but keeping it as it hurts a few kids. No matter what they did people would complain.
gchs_uk9
You could have two classes at UK and one at Louisville or visa-versa. While the idea makes sense on the surface, the KHSAA staff isn't near big enough to hold championship events at the same time in multiple locations. Splitt your KHSAA staff to run events at two places (when you already have a group running another event this same weekend - Tennis) C. Have to pay for more workers to run two sites D. For an event that is not cash positive to start with. BTW, if they didnt start till 4pm, why didnt the students take the test at one of the Fayette County Schools that day? This isnt band championships for petes sake. (I know you understand what I mean by that)
