Public School Closures - Teacher Protest

Featured Replies

I am going to try and tell it in a nutshell about teaching. Madeline Hunter, God rest her soul (on a side note she developed the teaching model our military and law enforcement use today) once said.

A teacher is dealing with 20-30 lively children of all abilities, emotions and sizes, for six hours a day where you have no idea what ay on eof them will do next.

A surgeon is working on one person laying on a table and they are out dead cold.

I was in education for 29 years and private bsusiness where I earned more than I did as a superintendent for 10 years. No comparison, none, teaching is much more difficult and stressful. Until a person has done both, you really don't know.

I haven't done law enforcement or fire, but I would guess (Ireally don't know) theirs is more stressful than teaching and that is saying a lot.

A private business? Did you work for a publicly traded company in sales seeking to hit your quarter?

If my heart fails on me, I’d rather have a surgeon work on me than a teacher? Different skill sets.

Yet we want to pretend that a surgeon could do a teachers job, or you could do a teachers job. Teaching requires expert knowledge and a specific skillset as well.

We can talk about who is wrong, who stole the money, who took from this or that, why they did it and none of that matters at this point.

What matters is how you fix this. My wife is a state employee with over 27 years in. So this to a pretty good degree affects me. I can tell you from a common sense stand point that yelling and pointing fingers will work about as good here as it does anywhere else. Not at all.

While I dont agree with everything that has been said at the "top" in regards to teachers, I do agree someone has to start the process of fixing it or it will dissolve. Like someone said earlier in this thread, if this was a federal program it would have been done long ago.

Yelling and screaming on the state capitol step "we are not gonna take it anymore" does not get it done and is as juvenile as the kids. Sit down. Try to figure it out. If you cant keep it as it is, come up with a plan to make it the best you can on what money you have. No compromise wont work. Never has, never will.

This is a problem that has been brewing for way longer than this Governor has been in office. If I were him, I would not sign the bill. I would just operate just like everyone else has for 25+ years and not seek re election. See what happens next.

Correct, and a heart surgeon is getting paid accordingly don't you think?

All of this with the pension fiasco is just another push out the door to veteran teachers, many who have been anxiously waiting to retire for the last 15 years or so when the dept. of education and schools stopped caring about the students as they should be cared for, and started putting all of the focus on test scores and teaching a test, instead of molding young minds the right way.

I agree. Private sector more difficult than teaching? That’s a hilarious notion.

Absolutely. I only coach in the school system. But I get enough of a taste in my 1.5 hours a day of working with the kids, that I know teaching all day is not going to be a walk in the park. I also watched my wife who was a teacher for about 10 years, half of which were spent in the Philadelphia inner city. People who think teachers can be easily replaced are way off base.

Yes, one of the two jobs. Sales Quota 3 million

I know that, just something to think about. A little levity which some seem to lose over time.

So teachers should sit quietly by and let this happen to them and their profession?

Man...:jump:

WV just had a successful teacher protest. I would think that gives KY teachers some evidence that yelling and screaming force politicians to pay attention.

Man I dont know the answer. I just know that when you have more going out that coming in and every side is yelling and screaming the desired outcome wont be good.

I feel for you brother, more than you know.

I would say the reverse is actually more accurate. Leave the private sector and teach. Most people can't hang.

I've said this here and I've said it elsewhere.

There's an expression often trotted out by those who don't particularly value the teaching profession. "Those who can't, teach."

I prefer a slightly modified version. "Those who can, learned from a teacher."

I believe I mentioned that in my post.

I would say the reverse is actually more accurate. Leave the private sector and teach. Most people can't hang.

That has been my experience with those I know who have done that.
