It surely wasn't. Spend any time on a social media site and you'll see it. The meme which (wrongly by the way) states that Switzerland issues guns to and requires all citizens to own a gun, and has little gun violence is making rounds. Heck the whole "arm the teachers" movement is in essence a statement that more guns will somehow solve the problem.

So what do you suggest a company like Dick's do if they are passionate about making a difference in his epidemic?

 

Stop all gun sales all together.

I don't know how to make it any more clear. They don't think they can stop the next shooter. They are just willing to do their part to TRY to prevent it. It's really not that hard to grasp.

 

You guys say that what they are doing won't make a difference, yet can never produce an alternative.

 

All they are really doing is telling the shooter to use a different medium.

If Dick's had any balls, they would stop all gun and ammo sales period. That way, not one more shooter could buy their weapon of destruction (or ammo) from them. That would be doing something. That would be removing yourself from the equation.

This is where I am. I've gone through some version of this spiel before, so my apologies in advance.

 

I have long held the belief that gun violence - not just mass-shooting related - should be approached as a public health issue. Research, education and prevention are key components in any such endeavor.

 

Can we stop all serious injury and death involving automobiles? No, but we've made significant inroads with a public-health approach. Roads are safer. Cars are safer. Trauma treatment is better. Can we assure that no one will die from influenza? No, but we keep plugging away with new vaccines and the like.

 

Just because an initiative won't prevent EVERY negative outcome, we should never stop trying to REDUCE those outcomes. In the "civilized world", we have the most guns, the most gun violence, and the weakest gun laws. I, like you, am monumentally disappointed in the "nothing will work" mantra. We're better than this.

Where are they being untruthful? They believe what they say because they think it will effect their bottom line in a positive way.

 

Just because I may not believe what a company believes or supports does not mean I think they are lying. I just don't agree with them.

If the action of Dick's and Wal-Mart deter ONE person from committing on of these acts, it was effective. If it makes you feel better to tell yourself that you guarantee that won't happen, knock yourself out. The idea that you could possibly know that is laughable. :lol2: You apparently need that.

 

Rather than attack my character, why don't you point out where I'm wrong? It would make the thread a lot better. Tell me how not selling an AR at Dicks will prevent another shooter. Do you think they will throw up their hands and give up the idea, or do you think maybe they'll just get it at say.....Cabelas. You are aware you can buy an AR online, right? Are you also aware the next shooter is out there and already has his gun?
