February 28, 20188 yr "One of the nation’s largest sports retailers, Dick’s Sporting Goods, said Wednesday morning it was immediately ending sales of all assault-style rifles in its stores. The retailer also said that it would no longer sell high-capacity magazines and that it would not sell any gun to anyone under 21 years of age, regardless of local laws. The announcement, made two weeks after the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that killed 17 students and staff members, is one of the strongest stances taken by corporate America in the national gun debate. It also carries symbolic weight, coming from a prominent national gunseller." Dick’s, Major Gun Retailer, Will Stop Selling Assault-Style Rifles - The New York Times
February 28, 20188 yr Author I think it's a great move that a major retailer is acknowledging the fact that we can do something about the issues we're having in our communities. It won't solve the problem, but it's certainly a step in the right direction. Hopefully more follow suit.
February 28, 20188 yr Quite a few corporations have made moves following the Parkland shooting. A lot of companies that had affinity programs with the NRA have ended their affinity programs. One of the companies that dropped their NRA affinity program was Delta Airlines. Now some Georgia legislators are looking at ways to remove tax incentives given to Delta. It will be interesting to see if any of the other gun retailers take any action following the Dick's / Field and Stream move.
February 28, 20188 yr Author One of the companies that dropped their NRA affinity program was Delta Airlines. Now some Georgia legislators are looking at ways to remove tax incentives given to Delta. Delta's main hub and HQ are in ATL right? Seems like Delta could pick and choose where they wanted to be, not sure the legislators really want to go down that path.
February 28, 20188 yr Delta's main hub and HQ are in ATL right? Seems like Delta could pick and choose where they wanted to be, not sure the legislators really want to go down that path. Probably a lot bigger undertaking than just up and moving their HQ. I fully appreciate Delta's decision and right to make the decision, but you make major decisions like that, you have to be willing to deal with the fallout. I have no issue with either Delta's or the legislators actions.
February 28, 20188 yr This changes nothing. Now the bad guys will just go to another store. And if all stores stop selling them, the bad guys will buy them on the street. You can't stop a motivated bad guy, you can only prepare to protect yourself.

Well of course it would be a huge deal to move, I'm just saying they'd have that option if legislators want to penalize them for their stance. Because that's exactly what that would be, a penalty.

February 28, 20188 yr It's their company, they can do what they want. That said I do not agree with their decision to only sell to those 21 years of age. Also, it will be interesting to see how the gun manufacturers react to this. Could they end their relationships with Dicks and refuse to allow their guns to be sold at Dicks?

You can't stop a motivated bad guy, you can only prepare to protect yourself. It doesn't. But it's really not as big a deal as it sounds. Dick's had already stopped selling these weapons in most of their stores. The only stores still selling those types of guns were the 35 Field and Stream stores. So for the most part, you really couldn't buy AR's at Dick's.
February 28, 20188 yr Dicks's has lost one customer. The decision to not sell what they deem to be (assault rifles) is one thing, I am ok with that I guess, even though they dont classify assault rifles correctly. The decision to only sell to 21 and up is where they lose me. So those that serve in the military (that are firearms trained) that are 18, 19, 20 can not legal purchase a gun in your store. I have issue with that.

Probably means something to Dick's and their stock holders who don't want the awful publicity that comes along with a mass shooting. Bill off the street's rep is a little less important than a corporation's. Logistically, it could make a difference if only certain retailers could/would trade in these weapons.
