I hear ya. It's just bizarre. And like I said very early on in the thread, it's all just a pet peeve of mine because I'm in the career I'm in constantly fighting this age stigma. It's a major hindrance to be taken seriously when someone makes their mind up about you based on your age.

No doubt. I will also say that I've seen the opposite, where older folks were discounted because of their age and a perception that maybe the pace would be too much for them. I advocate for them as well. I don't want to see anyone judged on age either way.

What does one do when retired at 53? I'm bored when I have a day off of work. I think I'll work til I die both out of necessity, and a general lack of knowing what to do with my time.

Please describe in a paragraph ALL of the millennials that you know.

I generalized based upon a comment from another, that they like flexibility in their job, they like to be entertained and they want to make a lot of money.

 

I don't really feel that I have to describe them all. I work in an organization of over 1700 individuals. I manage 30, almost all of whom are millenials . One thing I notice all too often are people of my age in executive roles not supporting their millenial counterparts, or treating them as if they are somehow deficient in their habits.

 

Your description of wanting flexibility and making is what everyone strives for. Why would you use it pejoratively when describing millenials?

Im not saying it isn’t also the younger people’s fault. But my point was, who teaches or allows them to be the way they are? I’ve never acted the way some here say millennials do, probably because I wasn’t raised that way...

Yep. It seems to me that many old people simply don't respect the younger generation, because we've found different ways (sometimes better, sometimes worse) of doing things.

 

One of the biggest traits I've noticed about millennials is that they do not revere, value or respect the elderly. A person pretty much gets elbowed out of the way in line, on the road, in crowds or on buses. They give you a look like "How the hell old are you grandma? Why don't you just hurry up and die", I do not mean my relatives. I'm not being critical, I'm just trying to make you understand how badly it feels when someone calls you "old".

In your post #148 you comment that whenever you're in OTR, you put your name in to 3 or 4 restaurants, then leave to go to a bar then whichever restaurant calls you first gets your business. Do you then call the 2 or 3 other restaurants to cancel your name from their lists?

Another thing that younger people don't realize, I know my hearing is not perfect, but sometimes I think I've forgotten the English language until I realize someone is speaking in texting language. Once on here I did not understand an abbreviation. One person proceeded to tell me to get with the program Mamaw. The next kindly told me where I could find a text dictionary.

Needless to say, when I saw the post saying BGP would like for everyone to have an avatar. Believe me I'm learning how to do it on my own.

Again, millennials aren’t solely responsible, but a lot of the old establishment’s dirty secrets are being aired for the whole world to see. Bet there’s a whole lotta people who feel like a whole lotta ‘isms are crumbling around them.

I can definitely agree with that. Constructive criticism is extremely important and it's how you learn/grow. Our generation is terrible with it.

I live in a rural part of Kentucky. I remember when I was a kid, if you were on the road in a car and a tractor (slow moving always) was in front of you, the tractor driver would pull over to allow the faster moving vehicles to pass. Now, that almost NEVER happens.

 

But here's the kicker. It's never a millennial driving the tractor. It's a baby boomer or a Gen-X'er.

100% true. But you have to dig deeper than that IMO. Why do they (we) not take criticism well? Is it because thats just who they are or is it because they were always praised growing up and didn't learn from a young age the value of constructive criticism? Could it be because after a tough day at practice when a kid is 10 years old they get in the car and mom/dad tell them that they are great and the coach doesn't know what they're talking about?

If they do move over now its usually accompanied with a 1 finger salute by the slow driver as I move past.
