Bowling Green 1 Breckinridge County 0 (Forfeit)

Featured Replies

It makes me wonder if the school isn't posturing to play a non-district schedule for the next two years, despite the recent alignment.
Possible.

Clay County, a basketball school, did this a few years ago when they were placed in 4A and had difficulty competing. Now that they are back in 3A they are doing fine. I see no problem with this and it beats dropping the football program.

Fulton County?

I was kind of thinking the same thing! Maybe they were thinking about Carlisle County being a basketball school, although they don't even play football at Carlisle.

That was a good move. Breckinridge County did the same thing several years ago and responded with a couple nice team in the late-90s, early 2000s. I'm not sure what all factors have led to this second demise, but maybe another trip to non-district play could build some confidence prior to rejoining district play.

Because it's a basketball town. Same as Muhlenberg County and Fulton County[/quote

In all honesty...Fulton County does not support any sport except for the die hard parents that attend the games.

Even not playing a bad Breckinridge Co team can't be good for Bowling Green at this point of the season. Do any of you think this will have a long term effect on the Purples?

Sorry to hear about the forfeit, but I believe Bowling Green will be all right, just stay on course to State.:thumb:

Don't combine Muhlenberg South with Muhlenberg North. People over at South do care about their program and kids, they have good attendance and are building a new lockerroom and weight room. There are no similarities between the two. Steve Sparks tells his players not to play football @ North, it isn't the case at South.

South just isn't good right now, but they've got good numbers and good young players.

I think almost every town besides town's in NKY are basketball towns... this is Kentucky. That doesn't mean that they don't support their football teams.

What is that supposed to mean?

I think he means that Northern Kentucky tends to favor football over basketball, whereas most other Kentucky communities (especially in rural areas) tend to favor basketball over football.

I'm not sure if I agree with the post, but I believe that is the intent.

Thanks for clearing it up then.

Absolutely they DO NOT need to drop the program. They need to get behind the program and support it.

There is no other sport that offers so much to so many as football. It is ridiculous that a 3A school can not field a competive football team. It is all about commitment from the top down.

They absolutely DO need to drop the football program, if they're going to forfeit even one district game. None of the qualities football can teach is being learned by the players at Breck now, if they're forfeiting district games.

Bracken County plays in a class A district with three of the top 10 class A schools in the state, they show up every week to play though.

Excellent point. My hats off to Bracken County. They get great fan support at their home games. I was quite impressed this year when we went there. And I also think Bracken will compete before its all said and done. They change districts next year.

That is horrible that the school system doesn't back all their programs equally. But as for forfeiting, I don't agree with it, unless of a death, illness, or something serious like that. If they forfeit just to avoid another beating, that is a horrible message to send to the kids. Regardless of the lack of support, or threat of getting your heads kicked in, the team should still go out and fight. Play the best football they can play, play with heart, and work on their execution, and hope that by some wild miracle they could win. But, by forfeiting there is zero chance of an upset, which would give the kids something to talk about forever. If every team in this same situation forfeited the USA would not have beaten the Russians in the 80 Olympics, etc.

I couldn't imagine forfeiting a game just because I am a huge underdog. That is what competition is all about.

Here let me clear a few things up about this whole mess. Everyone on here is bashing Breckinridge - and I'm not going to argue against what is said. I am associated with the program and can give you an idea as to what was behind the decision.

First let me say that I am NOT a coach or administrator at the school. Also, I don't agree that BC should have forfeited - it's very embarassing to do it BUT it was probably the best decision to be made.

In the past two years Bowling Green has severely hurt three players in the game and not from being cheap shot artists. They were just hard hitters and our guys got hurt. In 2004 a boy from BC broke his arm and in 2005 a boy from BC broke his ankle (it was hanging from his leg) and another boy hurt his neck. The last two had to be carried off the field in ambulances. This does not even include the normal bangs and bruises which come from a normal game.

Last week against Adair County BC had a very physical game with them. BC thought they had a chance to win (obviously they did not) so they played really hard. This week for practice on Monday 10 kids were not practicing because of injury. By Wednesday only two of them had come back and the starting noseguard went down with a high ankle sprain. BC would have had to play Bowling Green with many freshmen and sophomores who have very little experience on the varsity level. BG cannot start the game with their JV team or Freshmen team. They HAVE to play their starters because it is getting close to playoffs. BG needs to tune up and BC is just trying not to get people seriously hurt.

You can talk about how BC needs to prepare more so the injuries won't happen - that is not always the case. BC routinely has numbers in the 30's and play against teams who have numbers in the 50's. Those teams are able to use more kids and keep kids fresh in games and practice while BC has the same 30 kids hitting each other in practice and games. That abuse takes a toll after a few weeks. At what point do you decide when to hit and not to hit? If you hit all the time your players are going to break down but if you don't hit enough then you are not ready for it when the game happens. It's not an easy balance to find when you are limited in your numbers.

Kids are not interested in football at BC. There are plenty of kids walking the halls who could really help out but they choose not to play. I know firsthand all the coaches recruit the halls like crazy. They will get a kid out for a few days and they quit because 1) its too hard 2) they don't like a coach telling them they are doing something wrong 3) would rather work 4) millions of other excuses. Most kids don't even come out until school starts and they are going to scrimmage that week. I know the proper answer is don't let them come out but those are your better players. If you don't let them on there goes ANY chance of being competitive and you are going to get your brains bashed in while playing with kids who would not be water boys at places like Bowling Green. But the flip side is you are sending the wrong message to everyone "come out when you want because we let everything go". It's not an easy place to be in and there really is no answer.

Does BC need to drop football? I would hope not - it would be very embarassing for a AAA school to drop football from a lack of interest, competitiveness and other things. Does BC need to drop from the district? Probably not with the one it's going into next year. With more non-district games and the caliber of district teams they are facing they are in a good position for next year. Also, they do have a nice group of young players coming up who should be competitive.

Some have said the administration does not support the team and I don't agree with that. The current principal was an asst. football coach for several years and he does all he can to help the team. The board of education is a different story though. The field house that went up a few years ago was built from soccer plans. Nobody knows why they used soccer plans for a football field house but they did. The principal had to beg and plead for the BOE to spend the money to redo the field after several students took four wheel drive vehicles on it and messed it up. You think it looks bad now you should have seen it then. The head coach went to the facilities management guy and told him about the field goal posts TWO YEARS ago and they said it was fine. When it finally fell the BOE wanted the booster club to pay for the new goal posts. I don't care who you are that is just wrong.

There are many problems with BC sports but it's not fair to blame basketball on everything. I don't know what the situation is a Muhlenberg North or other places but our basketball coaches do support other sports. BC is a basketball school although more kids have went to play football and baseball in college than in basketball.

By no means am I defending the forfeit but there are valid reasons to why the forfeit did happen. BG will get more preperation for the playoffs with an intrasquad scrimmage than playing BC.

If you are looking for someone to blame then you need to blame - the players, coaches, administration, BOE, parents, community and everyone else you can think of. One person or group does not put a program into as bad a shape like this by themselves.
