January 24, 20188 yr How do you know its 300 miles away, if you dont know where it is? Really? I don't know where 95% of the cities are in this country but I can tell you in about 30 seconds how far they are from where I live.
January 24, 20188 yr Good point. lol Seriously? You guys obviously have internet service since you are posting on here. There's this new invention called google. When you go to their website, they have a feature called maps. You can type in two locations and it will give you the driving distance between the two. Let me know how you like it.

January 24, 20188 yr Crazy things happening in the Corbin area it sounds, it's quite saddening to be honest. I have a neighbor that moved to Ashland from Corbin not too long ago. He seem's like a nice enough guy and worked for the KSP in Corbin. When first introduced ourselves and he told me he was from Corbin I responded with "the Redhounds" and he responded with "how in the hell did you know that." Hah, anyway, now I'm gonna have to pick his brain a little about the race issue down there.
January 24, 20188 yr Author Let me this perfectly clear. My agenda is not to defend my hometown and represent it as some utopian model or a bright light on a shiny hill that overlooks a neighboring valley of despair and darkness. Corbin is far from perfect. It has worn the scarlet letter "R" for many years. It bears the stigma of racism, all the while neighboring towns with the same prejudices, seem to get a free pass. Racism isn't confined to one little SEKY town. The town and school is crying foul the loudest right now has it's own dirty little fingers when it comes to race and prejudice. We must keep this in mind.
January 24, 20188 yr The incident that started the all of the racist talk concerning Corbin occurred in approximately 1906. There were no lynchings or murders involved, although all of the black workers who were hired in from out of state to replace striking workers were loaded onto a train and basically run out of town. The guy who made that film back in the late 80's/early 90's took 2-3 high school boys out and supplied them with alcohol and then filmed them saying racist things. I know on the guys on that film and he told me that he thought the whole thing was just some sort of joke and he was just playing along, that is until the film came out. He also filmed a elderly man who claimed to be some sort of historian and got some outrageous comments from him on tape and then he had his short story. I honestly believe that 99% of what is said concerning Corbin is Urban Legend.

The "historian" that was interviewed was Alan Disney- one of the craziest old guys ever and a neighbor of mine back in the seventies. He knew his Corbin history but he was crazy as a loon. He named a black dog he had the N-word. He was quoted in the movie talking about his dog, the N-word. Edited January 24, 20188 yr by Science Friction
January 24, 20188 yr Author The KC football player of color mentioned earlier and the star player on the KC BB team have used terrible racially charged language at games and on social media videos that make the recent highly publicized 12 second, one sentence video look tame in comparison. Let's keep it in perspective; racist behavior is not limited to just one side. These teams have no business scheduling each other again.

Let them play but without fans, students, family, etc. in attendance. See how that works out.
January 25, 20188 yr I thought Hazard and Perry County Central had some intensity over the years in their rivalry (didn’t schedule one another for several years after it got too heated) but I believe the Corbin-Knox Central rivalry has that one topped.
January 25, 20188 yr I think a lot of Corbin's problem is the whole issue of the thing where there was a "race riot" and all the black folks were loaded up on a train and sent to London, Ky. It got big headlines in the C-J and other statewide papers at the time. Something like 1918 or 1919, where black folks were allegedly taking jobs from local white folks while white men at the time were in military service. It was discussed in a class I had at NKU some 20 years ago. Anyway, Corbin has been lily-white since then, and it seems the local folks were fine by that. They owned it, and were fine with being a "Sundown Town," as far as I can tell. I worked in that area a decade-plus ago, and two incidents stick out to me. I was at a basketball game at North Laurel HS, and the Corbin student section came out big, because they always do, and that's great. Please support your school. But there were two kids in the crowd with white wife-beater T-shirts with marker scrawlings on it that imitated Tommy Johnson and John Carlos from the 1968 Olympics where they did the "Black Power" fist thing. But it was "White Power," with the same fist. Another one was when I went to an E'town at Corbin football playoff game. I walked into the bathroom at halftime to relieve myself, and there was a bunch of people hanging around outside, which seemed weird. One guy said something to the effect of "you won't like what you find in there." I walked in, thinking someone dropped a horrible poop bomb on the toilet. No, it was one black guy taking a leak by himself. Like I was going to be infected by blackness. Corbin is a nice town, but their people have a lot of things they need to get over. It's just dumb.
January 25, 20188 yr What’s the point of this thread!?!? It seems to be "Corbin might be a racist town but so are the others around us." Or "We don't know the context of what the Corbin player said but the African American players from Knox Central are definitely racist and their fans are horrible and require police supervision." From reading his posts it seems Corbin is shouldering the burden of something that happened over 100 years ago and the Knox Central fans are the cause of the bad blood.

First hand knowledge. A guy I knew at EKU that played for Somerset in the late 70's and early 80's. He told me of a racially charged atmosphere at the Stadium during a game he played in.
