January 24, 20188 yr Author Another incident that I think led to the powderkeg becoming a firestorm was when a Knox Central football player( a black kid) hurled racist slurs at Corbin after a game. As far as the mother of brother KC athletes , everyone in this area knows her to be a drama queen extraordinaire. Not surprisingly, she seems to be super proud of her T-Shirts.

January 24, 20188 yr Author Agreed. I am very uncomfortable in SEKY but if I have a reason to be there then I am there. On December 30th there was a tweet after the Knox Central/Corbin game made by a Corbin resident and anyone who saw that tweet wasn’t surprised by last Friday night’s Snapchat. Just saying...... And trust me, for every tweet, there's a hundred folks expressing essentially the same sentiments at the dinner table. Sage advice for those passing through SEKY is "you don't wanna come around a sundown town."

Sage advice for those passing through SEKY is "you don't wanna come around a sundown town." You already know........ I always left the gym or the football field and didn’t look back. Gas up and eat BEFORE we get to town. Gotta go, gotta go!!!! And it wasn’t just Corbin we had that mindset in.
January 24, 20188 yr One is a predominantly white school, the other with a significant number of black athletes. I'm not from the area and my knowledge on the topic is limited but I was surprised that Knox Central has a "significant number of black athletes." I didn't know that there were any African-Americans in the Corbin/Barbourville area.
January 24, 20188 yr Author Those folks are brave right there. I guess that's one way to describe them . Maybe misguided also. Probably not familiar with the movie "Trouble Behind." Lots of good Corbin folk in that feature presentation. One was the "local historian," and former neighbor of mine. He said, "What's wrong with the word ------? I had a dog I named ------. " What a fool.

I do know there are several black athletes on both the basketball and football teams. "Several" to Corbinites equates to "significant." Edited January 24, 20188 yr by Science Friction
January 24, 20188 yr Interesting how some things never change. On this board a decade ago I documented a few things that I heard and saw from Corbin folks during my time in that area that struck me as awful, but was promised that "those folks weren't raised like that." I'll ask the same thing I asked then: How were they raised?
January 24, 20188 yr Author Let me assure all readers. This is not a just a Corbin thing. It's just as prevalent in surrounding towns and counties, including the great hamlet of Barbourville. Corbin bears the stigma, however. Kinda funny(or not funny, depending on your perspective) story. Several years ago, I was living in Richmond and was tutoring a kid who attended EKU at the time. He had just come over from Saudi Arabia a few months earlier. He had made me tea and we were exchanging pleasantries and he was telling me about the place he was from and about his family. He asked me to tell him about the place I was from. When I told him I was born and raised in Corbin, KY, he paused for a moment, got a real inquisitive look on his face, and asked , " Is Corbin that KKK town?" He had been in the country for maybe 3 damned months. I just nodded sheepishly and sipped my tea.
January 24, 20188 yr I honestly had no idea Corbin had the reputation that it does. I have watched Knox play a couple of times and one kids language and actions left a lot to be desired, but you can say they about a lot of kids.

I have watched Knox play a couple of times and one kids language and actions left a lot to be desired, but you can say they about a lot of kids. I agree. They have some nice athletes and a talented team but the times I have seen them their actions have been questionable, at best. Throwing up gang signs and hurling racial slurs after a win isn't cool. Also, proudly displaying THUG LIFE KC T-shirts isn't cute OR cool. Some of these things have likely contributed to a powderkeg becoming a firestorm.

If you showed me a blank map of KY I couldn't show were Corbin is. Even I know the rep Corbin has and I live almost 300 miles away.

January 24, 20188 yr Author Some folks have asked me my thoughts on the video comment itself and what other context there might have been other than the offensive one that everyone seems to assume. Is it possible that this was taken "grossly" out of context? Yes, of course it's possible. Corbin, weeks earlier, had suffered a disappointing loss at home in their own invitational tournament. That's a tournament that Coach P. and the kids from Corbin want to win almost as much as a district or regional title. It was a bitter setback to a hated rival who taunted them with racially charged language in Corbin's own gym. I think this had weighed heavily on the Corbin team leading up to the game this past Friday. We've all heard and used the phrase "got the monkey off my back." Is it possible the one Corbin kid had said something like " we finally got that monkey off our backs tonight" ? Then the controversial statement was made about sometimes you just got to put the monkey back in its cage. Is it possible? I'm not naïve but some were asking for another possible context, so there it is. I'm not necessarily saying this is the most likely context but only saying you can't say for absolute certain from one line in a few second video. I know a few days ago, a young black man by the name of Deion posted something on Panther Mama Drama's facebook page. Mama T. Drama had reposted the video of the Corbin kid. Why? Because she's Mama T. Drama. Anyway, Deion commented something to the effect of that he didn't see anything racist at all in the video. He said it seems to him that people are way too sensitive and are just trying to make something out of nothing. Obviously, Mama T. Drama didn't like the comment and told Deion to shut up. She has since removed Deion's post. It didn't fit her agenda. So, apparently, even an African-American man felt like more context was needed before making a judgment about the video. I have my own thoughts about the video and comment , which I will gladly lay out in due time.
