New NCAA Transfer Policy Coming?

Featured Replies

Interesting new tidbit came out of ESPN today as studio host Matt Schick went to Twitter with this:

“I spoke w/ an NCAA official this week who was “95% certain” transfers will soon be allowed to play immediately in basketball & football. Could be a one-time freebie, plus grad transfer option. So in theory, a student-athlete could play for three different schools w/o sitting out.”

This could be a big change for the college sports scene as players who aren’t happy with playing time, or being a role player could just find another team and switch without any repercussion. However, I think it needs to be said that these players should not have to adhere to the current archaic rules which demands they sit out an entire season. If a kid wants to move on, let them move on.

To prevent chaos he goes on to say that the NCAA would probably need to have a “transfer period” where players can freely switch schools.

I think this would lead to the rich getting richer and tampering with other teams players would be rampant.

Not sure what the answer is to transferring is, but I could see the small schools getting killed by this. Especially in basketball.

I don't want the big boys out there recruiting college campuses as well as high school.

But on the flip side shouldn't kids be able to move as easily as coaches do?

I completely understand that argument.

Like I said, I don't know what the answer is. I just worry this would create total chaos.

The end of mid-major basketball is coming...

Or get better by getting transfers from major schools when those players don’t get the time they expected.

I’m on the side that thinks this evens the playing field for smaller schools. Let’s say player A is at Alabama was a 4 star recruit but after a couple of years hasn’t seen the field because he has 2 5 stars in front of him. That player could leave and play immediately at any school of his choosing. I see it both ways.

Good. Let them transfer.

It already happens now with regularity...

I understand, and I don't have the answer either....but take Alabama in this same scenario. Bama would have to replace that guy because the big boys secret to success is depth. In order to keep the depth that Bama needs or (thinks they need), they have to find a player from somewhere (Middle Tenn st, Toledo, Jacksonville State etc). It's gonna be interesting.

Or move as easily as any other student?

I say no because coaches get paid and that makes it their job/livelihood. Players don't get paid so they shouldn't have the same freedom as coaches. Just my opinion.

I don't understand that logic. Help me out...

Student-athletes...

While they do play basketball or football, they aren't basketball or football players. That would insinuate that they are professionals. Their pay goes toward an academic well-being.

Let's take The Jake for example. He's on scholarship at WKU, but say he decides to change majors and go to a university with a more distinguished under-water basket weaving program. Why should he have to sit out of his extra-curricular activities based on his decision to make a move for his academics?

Do college students not have the freedom to make decisions based on what is best for them and their families? That's a college coach's go-to when he takes a better paying job.

Or what if a scholarship opens up at their dream school? No-go because their livelihood doesn't depend on them attending the best school they can get into? Because last I checked, Cal was doing just fine at Memphis. He didn't need a huge raise in order to pay his bills, but he saw greener pastures. Students don't get that same luxury?
