Running Clocks and Blowouts

Featured Replies

Well there was some running clocks tonight and not very many close games-- so take this round of playoffs out too

- 17 out of 24 games were won by 21 or more points--

Means we need to make changes to this round

What is your suggestion? My senior year after Beating a team in the semis in double overtime we would have put a running clock on the team in the quarter finals (before running clock). I agree with you but I don’t even know where to begin. People will say go to 4 class system. I think it may be even worse. There are just areas and teams that have that much more talent.... my opinion...

I think biggest issue was when khsaa jumped from 4 classes to 6.. I think it could have been to 5 first

Only take the 1 seed for the playoffs.

Meh.. take the 1 and 2 seeds, possibly 1, 2, and 3 seeds with a first round bye. Taking the top 4 is ridiculous. Or go to a Harbin point system like Ohio. Anything would be better than the current system.

You say take just 1,2 or 3..... Is that per distric? Like I mentioned in post 1. We beat a #1 seed in round 4 by 42. This won’t fix anything. I hate to say it but AGAIN, there areas with better teams year in, year out. All depends on which class. You may have a few year gap but as an example out of my schools class. What region/ district/ part of state has 6A been held in almost every year?

BTW- My school has won several championships but have had many down years...

Blowout games happen, yes. I don't think there is any denying that. I don't think anyone is trying to. What makes for better football though...more blowouts, or fewer?

Is there any way to get around the fact that there are teams that have a disparity in players, talent or ability? No. Is there any way to avoid teams with a disparity in players, talent and ability from meeting in the playoffs? No. Does that mean we should create a scheme where MORE teams with a disparity of players, talent and ability meet in the playoffs? Well...you tell me that.

What is the more valuable lesson in life? Do we teach our athletes that sometimes things just don't go your way and you need to learn to deal with that and thrive all the same? Or do we teach them that sometimes things don't go your way but that means the system needs to be re-written to give you another chance to try to compete with those who have thrived?

CWB applying philosophy to football.

M. Scott Peck, anyone?

Though a couple of games that were blowouts during the regular reason, went the opposite way. Some games are bound to be blowouts, but sometimes it's all on what team shows up.

I thought this was the best round of Region games in a while. I think 4-5 teams? that lost during the regular season matchup, won the rematch.

Don't forget that one cause of blowouts can be that at this stage the teams that fall behind are playing with nothing to lose by trying desperate measures to get back in the game. A gamble here that backfires, a gimmick play that blows up, an all-in pass rush that leaves an uncovered receiver, etc. can all implode leading to repetitive desperate calls and an avalanche of points. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I don't necessarily conclude that 3rd round blowouts speak to a structural playoff problem.

Lol i was thinking the same thing. Just take this round out too. Let's just eliminate football all together, just have the kids work out hard all year and then say you cannt play games cause the adult expert fans dont want you to play the games.

5 classes, or 4 or 3 or 2 or 1 will not eliminate blow outs, neither will 2 teams from each district nor 1 team. It is what it is , people keep beating a dead horse. Someone say it!!! Belfry , 4 time state champ got blown out, they should not been in the playoffs. LOL yeah I know that is a stupid thought.

I have to agree with Tall Trees...

Every year this site debates playoffs who should get in and who shouldn’t. Bottom line we have 6 classes, instead of being critical how about supporting every kid that spends his Friday nights playing for his school and his teammates.

Six class system isn’t changing anytime soon. So if you are tired of blowouts how about volunteering at a local school that gets blown out every year...

I’m sure their coaching staff could use some help. Someone should show up at Belfry this morning talk to the coaching staff about getting blown out. Tell them they don’t need to be in the playoffs.

Sometimes you need watch the game and not the score. Example would be the Beechwood/KCD game. Looking at the score it doesn’t seem like it was a good game. But watching it you see how close it was for majority of the time.
