There is no question out of district kids have helped Highlands' program over the years.

 

The only debate is to what degree. Since we can never really know the answer, there is no point discussing.

I have personally talked with a member of Highlands staff who not only coached with Mueller but played under him as well, and he says that it has a little to do with talent and more to do with BW. He said he really like BW but the same take no prisoners hard knocks football mentality is no longer there. The kids don't work as hard as DM had them working and he said there are times when he feels BW loses the kids during practice as far as attention and effort goes. Its not everyday but you cant be a perennial championship team when your team isn't working 110% at least most of the time which isn't the case anymore.

 

And I have to say I agree with Mustang, its hard to complain about talent when you have over 100 players on your roster, there has to be 11 that can play one way or another. 1A-3A teams often have most of their team playing both sides of the ball the whole game, if thats what it takes to win at 5A then thats what you do. Coaches jobs are to put the best 11 on the field in order to win.

 

I mean, if they wanna cut some of those, send on a bus up US27 and I'm sure @Mustang and I will find a home for them.

It is easy to coach when you are able to overwhelm your opponent game in and game out like was done over that 8 year stretch. When you are not able to do that, then what? Well apparently there are fractures in the coaching staff and that cannot be good for any team any where.

I am not surprised at all by this discussion. "The only reason HHS won was because of outside talent", apparently no one else but Dale can motivate and coach, kids aren't working as hard, fire the staff.....did I miss anything?

HHS averages about 3-4 state championships in every decade since the 60's, they don't win one EVERY year!

A couple of years of not winning and it's all the sudden a crisis......Covcath has a great team this year and MAY win a state championship......for historic purposes go back and read some CovCath threads leading up to this now, sound familiar ?!

 

People, relax and enjoy Covcath's run in HHS absence, appreciate the renewed rivalry, and I'm guessing HHS will have their day again.

To the posters saying that BW is a great defensive coach: What games have you been watching? Our defense was DISMAL this year. No top 20 spots in 5A for defensive team stats.

Verbatim? No, but it wasn't directed just at one person. There are a few on here that like to downplay the impact of the players that I listed.

 

As for the players from Ft. Thomas that didn't go to Highlands. One major one is the Head Coach at CovCath, and then basically every good NewCath QB after that on top of many other Breds.

 

Are you saying that if they live in Ft. Tomas they should go to Highlands because if so then NCC can say because they are catholic they should go to NCC. It would be interesting to know how many students at Highlands are catholic.

A lot of what you say makes sense but I think the major concern with the natives is the culture change and not just the Wins/losses. Yes, they aren't going to win every year but when you lose and you see a change in culture it can be concerning to those who are close to the program.
