Trading Films

Featured Replies

I would like to have a thread just for this issue. I have always coached basketball and have traded films with other coaches in order to scout another team. For example, Bellevue trading with New Richmond in order to see their game against Calvary.

I don't understand the logic in trading film with your next opponent. Why would I want to provide them with means to beat me? I would rather make them travel and scout me in person so they cannot rewind and analyze on a screen.

What am I missing?

I love music and I spend every day of my life listening to music for hours.

Back to trading films, with tech the way it is and Hudl, this kind of nonsense shouldn't be in anyone's job description.

Coaches should be able to focus wholly on their football team.

At this point I’d say you may as well continue with the tradition, because one way or the other, they’ll get your film. Too many connections.

I think the idea is just to make the whole process easier for everyone. You're going to get the game film anyways unless you are just a lazy coach. If you're going to get the film anyways, then the agreement is why not just save yourself some time tracking down the game film from another coach or sending someone to video/scout when you can just swap the film with the other coach and be done with it.

Exactly. They're going to get your film and you're going to get their film regardless of whether or not you send it to them. I don't see it as a big deal. Just saves everyone a little time and effort.

Doesn't the KHSAA bylaws require you to trade 2 films?

Yes I thought so. Here is the language from the KHSAA competition rules for football...

What is the penalty if a team doesn't trade film?

A sternly written letter?

A public shaming on BGP is part of it.

Both sound about right.

It just seems odd to me. I couldn't imagine Trent Steiner giving Steve Fromeyer a film of his own team playing. Is basketball just different?

It's a gentlemen's agreement type thing. Specifically since it benefits both. It's an even trade, one for one.

Also, it's a rule.
