Just hard to fathom. My prayers to Coach and his family, and I hope the little ones make it OK. This puts things in perspective.

Prayers for the coach and family, horrible tragedy.

Last night was such a surreal night-as surreal as I've been involved in in my 13 years associated with St Xavier. We had a moment of silence prior to the game ( well written I might add), advising that we as a larger community, not just PRP, had lost a great person and it just silenced the crowd until PRP went 80 yards on the 1st play. Incidentially, star receiver and db Shannon Bishop's brother passed away yesterday from brain cancer and he started the game catching the TD. Coach Williams had a cast on his right arm and a blank stare during the toss( right after the moment of silence ) , but coached his team up on the sidelines during the game with his usual enthusiasm. The game was hard fought and it was 7 -7 in the 4th quarter with the winner. St Xavier rode Allgeier to the go ahead TD midway through the 4th quarter and you could see the PRP team lose its focus and energy drain and slowly it became evident that this game would not go its way. It was evident in their expressions and body language that life was throwing another hurdle their way.

From the St Xavier side, it was as if you didn't want to win as you became such admirers of the PRP class and dignity displayed, as if somehow PRP deserved to win because of the events of this week. All night, both teams helped each other up after tackle, never a taunting word uttered. As both teams shook hands after the final horn, both teams and coaches gave hugs to each other and St Xavier broke from tradition by not singing the alma mater, but rather choosing to kneel in prayer. Coach Wolford was emotionally touched and called this game the best game he had ever been involved in.

We watched Coach Williams address his 2017 team one last time. This senior class of PRP, Shannon Bishop, B J Robinson, Dayon Pulliam, Nostradamus Vernon, etc had gone undefeated as freshmen and broken the winning streak of Bowling Green earlier their senior year. Actually, Amanda Williams had organized their last homecoming ceremony which was the best event we witnessed this year. I don't know what Coach Williams said to his team but he pointed to his heart often. We all know that his loss was much more than just a meaningless high school game in the scheme of things. We thought about the task in front of him, a 6 year daughter and 2 premature born twins still in the hospital and a funeral next Monday. We pray that God gives him peace in this time of turmoil.
