This in spades. That really was the best team of the Danville run from '91 to '94. They beat AAA runnerup Lincoln County and AAAA runnerup Shelby County handily that season. Just demolished everyone until that night in the semi-finals against Prestonsburg. I still believe those Ads would have beaten the Black Cats 9 out of 10 but that game was the one and the only one that counts.

Speaking of Newport, what about the 1985 Newport team?

 

They controlled Danville in the mud in the Regional Final that year. But you guys seemed to control them pretty well in the next round. :thumb:

1982 Somerset would have won the title if they had beaten Boyle.

 

Just curious, what is the "controversial" part of that loss? I know I look at it with a different shade than jumper fans but don't really recall controversy. Boyle played the perfect "big play" game to win. Returned a KO for a TD, completed a long pass for one and maybe a punt return too if I recall. Somerset, if I remember correctly, were only stopped by their own turnovers that night. About four I think. Well, they were stopped on the 2 point play which Cain should have given the ball to Stephens. He only had about 200 yards rushing that night.

That's the controversial part for everyone that I know, QB supposedly changed the play and called his own number...of course he didn't get in.

1997 Trinity team beat St. Xavier in regular season 9-0. Lost to the same Tigers 3-0 after a fumble by back up QB gave St. Xavier the ball deep in Trinity territory. The Tigers were pushed back 10 yards by the defense but kicked a field goal to win it and deny Coach Servino a title as a player and as a coach.

Is that the year 2A (I mean 5A) Mercer came in to Newport and barely got out with the win?

 

No. That would have been the 2006 season I believe. Newport went to Mercer in the 2005 season.

I guess I was wrong about the "barely" part. I went to the Newport/Mercer game and I thought I remembered the game being much closer than the score. I remember the Mercer fans coming on here claiming there was a new king in 5A too.

 

That was the first year of the merger.

In 1974, the final season with AAA being all Jefferson County, ended for Trinity with a 3-0 loss in the semi-finals to St. Xavier. The Tigers won the regular season tilt 21-0. In 1975, Trinity fell to the Tigers 11-10 in the semi-finals in first year of 4A. The winning safety was recorded with less than 30 seconds to play on a snap over the head of the Trinity punter. These two victories by the Tigers capped the last back-to-back state titles for the green and gold. Head Coach Bill Glaser used this as a catapult into college coaching with Morehead State for one season and then with the University of Kentucky. Trinity's losses by a total of four points denied the Rocks from winning 6 consecutive titles in the 70s.

1984 Trinity team with I believe 6 D-1 athletes, 4 of which played in the NFL. Went 9-2, losing to Ballard in the regular season and 20-0 to St.X in the playoffs. All of the future pros played on defense, but the 2 LBs ended up playing RB in college and the NFL. Might have been an unstoppable backfield. Woulda. Shoulda. Coulda.

I think that was 1988 with Purdue Coach Jeff Brohm at quarterback for Trinity.

Not entirely true. They got over the Bowling Green hump in 2009 and then ran into the Highlands buzzsaw. In 2008 they didn't even have to see Bowling Green, losing to Christian County instead.... who then were rocked by Highlands. The reality is that none of those teams 2007-2010 were going to beat Highlands. Now, 2011-2013, I wholeheartedly agree. As Hardin County Preps noted, 2012 in particular. They had that one. They really could have (maybe should have) had 2013 as well.

1989 Warren Central and 1990 Warren Central weren't the best in the state, but they were awfully good. 1990 in particular with Damon Hood going on to win Mr. Football. They had the misfortune of butting heads with Trinity in the midst of their state record streak. Just unfortunate timing.

I watched a lot of those games in 1989 and 1990 in person, and WC was a LOAD those two years. Hood was a J.O.K.E. in high school...man against boys. That is a great call, DF.

1992 CCH team has to be mentioned. Beat Highlands in regular season by several scores but lost to them in a muddy game in the playoffs to finish 12-1. I think the D has the most shutouts in school history.

There was a KR for TD and a PR for TD. I remember that last play like it was yesterday. Until the 2009 Lone Oak/Boyle game it was the best Boyle County game I ever saw.

Totally agree about the 1992 Covcath Colonels. They were loaded and lost a game in the mud to Highlands, who they throttled earlier in the year
