State Champ vs State Champ

Featured Replies

How many fans would like to see KY state champ vs KY state Champ? Say the 1A champ plays the 2A, 3 vs 4, and 5 vs 6. I know that would never happen but I think it'd be a pretty cool concept.

I'd be satisfied with going back to four classes.

It might be a neat concept, but what would they be playing for?? Not to mention the season is too long as it is. Adding this game would make a 16 game season for those 6 teams. How do you get fired up to play a game after the state championship for a game that really doesn't mean anything.

A charity event

I'm not a fan of this idea. Indiana did this in basketball when they split classes and I hated it when I was living there.

Doing it in football is even worse of an idea, in my opinion. I agree with what @rjs4470 said.

Again, in theory this sounds great. In reality though, I think these games would be disappointing at best. How do you get the coaches and players to even care, since the game means nothing? The game would be anti climatic after the state championship, and I can envision many players deciding against playing, especially those that are committed to play at the next level or that play basketball or wrestle. Plus after already playing 16 games+a scrimmage, guys are going to be done with the grind. It's just set up for potentially bad football.

Not to mention with basketball and other winter sports in full swing, coupled with possibly really cold weather, and what could be a second straight week of long travel for some, I'm confident that this event would probably not be be well attended, even if it were held for charity.

Think NFL all-star game in terms of player participation and intensity.

I could get very excited about two teams chosen solely by a vote of all the head coaches in the state for the Ky High School All Division Championship. No one knows the teams better than those in the trenches. To eliminate any self-division bias, each coach's vote would be restricted to voting for teams from classes other than their own. The vote would be electronically taken the Sunday after Classification Championships for the following week All Division Championship game. To keep from extending season, the entire season would be moved up and week zero would be eliminated along with fall break open week.

Another possibility would dovetail this strategy with cutting playoffs to two teams rather than 4 from each Division. This would allow a little political oxygen for not eliminating zero week and that bizarre "open" week for fall break.

Good luck getting coaches to participate in the voting. And I don't know that coaches are anymore qualified than any one else to vote. For example, how many coaches in NKY know anything about 3A teams?? Plus, I can guarantee there are enough grudges, feuds, and bias out there that politics would likely play a pretty large role in the voting.

I also think the idea of monkeying around with the season in order to accommodate a "All Division Championship" game after the State Championship has already been played is bad. Especially if you want to eliminate the bye week, which I think coaches universally like. Anything the further condenses or makes scheduling less flexible is, IMO, not smart, especially to play a game in the grand scheme of things, would mean very little.

The idea sounds fun. But I think it's more fun to talk about who would win something like this, than it would be to actually watch it play out. Playing a championship after a championship is simply anti-climatic, and does nothing for the sport or the teams involved.

At first thought, the idea of post-championship bowl games sounds like fun. But I'm sure that the logistics of it all and the possible lack of interest from some, if not all of the teams involved, would put a damper on it.

If only top 2 teams per district made playoffs, then you could consider it.

Move to 4 classes (Not 6)

Cut qualifying playoff teams in half

1A Champ vs 2A Champ

3A Champ vs 4A Champ

It will never happen, but it should. No one will ever convince me that a team that goes 2-8 or 3-7 should make playoffs.

The $ you would save not having to make "Participating Trophies" for everyone, could be better used somewhere else.

The downside is that creates larger districts, and more blowout, bad matchups in district play, and giving teams who wish to schedule tougher out of district games less opportunity and flexibility to do so. And you'll still have playoff and finals blowouts.
