I will take this further, if I was a 6A school I would try and schedule the 6A powers if they would play. I would not back away from Trinity, St X, Male, Manual, Scott Co., etc. I wouldn't schedule them all, but I would schedule 1 or 2 every year. I doubt Trinity would play many in state, though.

Outside of Trinity, Scott County, X, and Male I don't think any KY 6A school should be over scheduling. What you do it pick a couple of good spots for your program against the best and then play the rest of your milk toast schedule.

They are very solid coming up through, but I feel this thread is a bit premature. Lets see what they look like next year without a D-1 three year starter at QB. They have a nice system, and have some momentum building but they are just 2 years away from breaking a long losing streak against their main rival and losing to a single A rival.

 

Considering what they can draw kids from the question should be why hasn't this happened yet?

I agree, any school serious about competing in 6A from NKY should play CovCath every year no matter what. Right now Ryle and Simon Kenton qualify to play the Colonels, everyone else in NKY 6A needs to stay away.

 

Not if I'm coach. I want to play because I would think I was going to be in the hunt every year. Schedules are made two years in advance, in most cases. There is nothing right now that would lead be to believe this trend will continue with them. As others say, this is pre mature.

Cov Cath is having a killer year. They have their ups and downs also. Two years ago we won a squeaker, last year we blew them out, this year they blew us out. Ryle will continue to play them. Other schools looking for competitive games to prepare them for the playoffs should play them. Padding your reguler season with almost guaranteed wins to look like studs and lose early in the playoffs every year is not the formula.

 

Yep, the Raiders can play CCH on the Varsity but don't dare play them in Middle School Football.

Hope they keep winning but this is premature. It has happened in the past as SK was an annual beat down and they stopped playing at some point. Between out of state, good rivalries like Beechwood and Highlands and district games, there doesn't have to be many other NKY teams. Ryle is working well for both teams right now. Cooper on average should be a good test for both teams and is likely to continue. That's 2 6a and some good out of state lined up for awhile.

 

It is not premature, schools have to make decisions stretching 2 to 4 years into the future with their football scheduling.

I'm just saying... CCH scheduling big Ohio schools might be getting ahead of themselves. Last time they played a GCL South school it didn't go too well...

 

But I love when they schedule teams like Sycamore. They usually are pretty good (until they face Colerain) and match up well against CCH. Kings, however, isn't the best competition for CCH. I'd like to see them face teams like Sycamore, Fairfield, and maybe Colerain if they keep the good seasons up. But again, GCL schools are a little far and above.

If this were to happen, Covington Catholic has plenty of options to play teams from Louisville, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis.

If I am a 6A coach in NKY I want to play the best. I would keep my schedule to 5A and 6A programs. I would play one or two mentioned and then schedule what I would consider winnable or even games. Milk toast scheduling is not any good for the team that is way superior. There may be something to learn from it for the one getting pummeled, but not too much.

 

I thought NCC in the past has been the best at scheduling. They played teams early that were better, took their lumps, but learned. They then made the playoffs count by going on long runs through the playoffs and winning one or two.

I do not understand why anyone would schedule them in the first place. All you are doing is giving them access to everyone in your community to "entice" future student athletes to attend their school.

Especially Boone County School systems teams that have closed enrollment. Do not give me the, only restricting yourself or just limiting yourself because of your own policy line either. The football coaches have to deal with the hand they are dealt and they are not going to be able to change school board policy. So, why go to CCH what is the benefit for NKY teams?

Same thing goes for scheduling Beechwood.

 

I hear what you are saying and they are all reasons to get out of Boone County if you a son that is good in football with the possible exception of Ryle.

To bring out the best football in NKY, Ryle, SK, Highlands, and Cov Cath should all play each other EVERY year.

 

I agree, those four schools should comprise the unofficial, official NKY Big Boy Football League.

Pikeville is already experiencing these problems from being a successful 1A program and winning a state championship in 2015. Can you imagine trying to schedule games while being dominant in the smallest classification? They have 9 games scheduled for 2017 and 1 is at Calloway completely across the state. Personally, I like the Phillip Haywood method of scheduling a team that can beat you, it would be hard to challenge his scheduling methods based on Belfry's success. I believe Paintsville is seeing dividends from scheduling a very good Hurricane WV team. After that loss (they hadn't lost a regular season game in 2 seasons) Paintsville looked much improved vs Pikeville/WBurg.

 

To answer your question, I do not think Cov Cath ever has trouble finding games in NKY, most expect Cov Cath to be Cov Cath and always put a quality product on the field. I feel like Beechwood and Lex Cath also agree with Haywood's method in scheduling quality teams in order to prepare for a deep run, so I do not think either will dodge Cov Cath in the future. In a densely populated area as NKY/Cinci, I cannot see CCHS ever struggling to fill out a schedule like Pikeville did this season. Would love to see a JCHS/Cov Cath regular season battle!

Right, if you are CovCath you don't want to make the same mistakes they have made for the past couple of decades over-scheduling.

 

As a matter of fact, it was so bad for so long at CCH it makes me think there was a conflict of interest in the past.

I am not feeling too comfortable about comparing a tough 2A school to Big Boy Football scheduling.
