The Extra Point

Featured Replies

EP should not be done away with. Those that have kickers should be rewarded. Those that dont will go for 2. Just the nature of the game...

Scolly loss to Kentucky kids that can kick would also be a negative impact to elimination of the kicker

My thought process is: after a touchdown, the offense stays on the field and attempts the point after, rather than the kicking team.

Many games are decided by the kick attempt on the point after touchdown. I am guessing you want to speed up the game. You desire more emphasis on the full offense for the outcome of the contest rather than a snap, a hold, and a kick by folks who usually play sparingly.

Are there really a lot of high school teams that have kids that just kick? Did not realize that things had become so "specialized" in this area.

I'm not sure I understand why you feel the extra point should be eliminated. Teams score touchdowns all the time too...lets make that harder while we are at it.

I was just thinking the same thing? Why do you feel it necessary to take the extra point away?

Understood. However, I don't understand the desire to make this change.

I'm with them.

I don't see any good reason to make a change away from kicking extra points.

Kicking has always been a part of the game. Why penalize teams that have gotten good at at?? I also would hate to see the risk reward choice of kicking for one or putting your offense on the field for two go away. Changing that from going for an easy 1 point or a hard two points after a TD to a hard one vs a harder two doesn't seem as exciting, or as balanced. With no kicks, I think you'd see teams always going for two, since your going to fail the vast majority of the time regardless of which option you choose. Thus you'd see less strategy and decision making. Right now, I think the kicked extra point is a great balance and provides a true risk versus reward scenario.

For a lot of teams the extra point is a crap shoot. They don't spend much time practicing it and it shows. Some don't even know how to block for it.

And, yes, to whoever said it. Many teams just have a soccer player as their kicker... it has become very specialized. I've seen this work well and I've seen it not work so well. I don't quite get why a high school team would have a kicker that is lousy at extra points and can't kick the ball beyond the 10-yard line. I've seen this too many times. How much time and how much instruction is being given to this key aspect of football? I am sure if they lined up their players and said have a hack they would find one that could kick the ball to the 5-yard line at least. I guess in some cases, the kicking game is the only time the player gets a rest so they don't want to make him kick too.

I know in High School, kicking an extra point is not as easy as in college or the pros, but does anyone feel as if there should be a rule change? If it were up to me, I would eliminate the kick and have a team attempt a "2 point conversion" from the 2 yard line but only count for 1 point. A team could still go for 2 points but the yard marker would be pushed back further. Anyone have thoughts?

Horrible idea. It should be easier in high school....shorter distance than pros....goal post are a mile apart....I mean c'mon.

The only reason teams cant complete an extra point kick is because they don't practice it during the week. And if you don't have a kicker, then go for 2 pt conversion. Even if only get half of them, you're still keeping up with your opponent.

Then we should do away with punts too...why change personnel when you are just giving the ball away? And situational substitutions, like speed packages, heavy packages, etc. And what about field goals....most teamI'm not sure why changing a few people is such a bad thing for extra points, but yet not bad for other plays or situations.

Beautiful

The reason teams aren't that great at field goals is simply because they don't practice them enough. Kicking at the next level is also suffering because kids aren't being taught...coaches are more worried about running up the score and padding the stats.

Sorry, but I don't buy that kicking is suffering at the next level. If anything it's better than ever. There are camps devoted to just kicking. When I played in the 80's, kicking at the high school level for the most part was terrible. Now, while there are some teams that still struggle, with the willingness of soccer players to do double duty, most schools have serviceable kickers. Heck, I've seen an 8th grader that can hit from 50 yards, and regularly puts the ball in the end zone on kickoffs. Kicking is better than ever at the high school level.

To your point about teams not kicking field goals in order to run up the score....In reality, the teams that are running up the score, are normally the teams that can and do kick field goals.

Why do we call it FOOTball?

KICK the extra point.

Punt the ball.

Kickoff.

There is also the forgotten Free Kick.

Doing away with kicking the extra point would not speed the game up. The ball is marked ready for play just like any other play. You have 25 seconds to snap.

One of the best celebrations in High School football is a long game winning field from a kid who hardley see the field otherwise. You can't take that away. I can't even believe this is even being discussed on this site.

Ummmm.... don't think that OP is considering the 5 other classes outside of the level Trinity plays at

I would argue for many teams in KY that kicking the XP is more of a challenge than getting a conversion.
