I hate that the rule is 36. Why not make it 35 to avoid this question more often?

Sooner you get to a running clock the sooner you can rest starters play backups and hopefully have less injuries associated with more plays and more time on the clock so I would.

I know a really classy coach who knew he was going to put up big numbers on a rival. He just wanted to get the game over with no one from either team hurt. I recommended he go for 2 early in the game so when it came down to the 36th point, a simple extra point puts it to a running clock.

If I'm not mistaken Lexington Catholic lost to St. X a few years ago when they opted not to go for 2 in this situation. X was able to come back and win. If you're playing a hapless team then no, if you're on the verge of an upset absolutely.

So, my varsity scores 36 on you i'm the bad guy but my varsity scores 42 on you i'm classy, got it.

Go for 2 every time.

For the record; like others have posted- I've been on both ends (the opponent running the clock more than us running it), and it's without question the thing to do.

This will also sound bad, but when you're on the receiving end of that butt kicking...especially during one of those ROUGH years, and it's not the first time?! You want your opponent to go for 2 also.

What Harry said!

Yes. By the time it gets to 34, everyone wants that running clock.

Jmo

No brainer. Yes. Both coaches want game over as quickly as possible. The sooner running clock starts, the less points winning team will have.

The only way I would not is early in the season when I would want the defense and offense to have more reps with players I may or may not come to count on in District and Playoff time.

In District or Playoffs game..........get to 36 any way you can and get off the field.

Safely secures the VICTORY!

Harry and I have had this conversation a few times. There are some nights the best thing for both teams is to get the heck out of there!

A couple years ago Coach Haywood of Belfry went for two at the end of the first half to put a running clock on Lex Cath in the state title game. Coach Haywood is the classiest coach I have every witnessed, and he basically called the dogs off in the second half. I obviously don't know why he went for two, but in my opinion he figured Lex Cath was a dangerous team, and he wanted to get the game over with quickly. Like I said he called the dogs off so he did it in a very classy way which he always does.

It not classy to prolong misery. And stop hiding behind the theory that getting JV guys reps against other JV guys on a Friday night for one or two series will be the difference in you winning a state title. Go for two, get the running clock, and let everyone go home.
