Dalton vs good teams that made playoffs over his career with more than 1 game played

Ravens 6-5***

Colts 2-2

Cardinals 1-1

Cowboys 0-2

Broncos 1-3

Texans 1-5

Patriots 1-2

Giants 1-1

Steelers 3-9

Seahawks 2-0***

For a combined 18-30 record, that's a 37% winning %. Not good.

Out of the list there are only 2 teams he has a winning record over. I also excluded from the list bad teams he also has a losing record over. These are just the teams that during his career have been considered really good teams at one time.

Dalton isn't as great as some of you believe he is. Out of the 10 teams listed he has played several times he only has a winning record over 2 of them, and one is a divisional opponent where he faces twice a year. Only beating 20% isn't a good clip.

Now if anyone wants to do more research I would be interested in what his record is against teams with a winning record each year for his career.

We will probably never agree, but I don't think anyone said great. He is a solid NFL QB.

Solid doesn't have a 20% winning % over good teams. He is avg at best. Avg doesn't get it done, as he has proven time and time again.

And those numbers would be the same or worse if McCarron were the QB. That is the bottom line for me. I just don't think McCarron is better than Dalton.

And I will add this since I missed the discussion in threads on here about McCarron's INT ... anyone who thinks that INT last night was a good pass by McCarron has such a biased view it makes me question their judgment on this issue. That was a bad pass to a receiver who was very open by NFL standards. That INT was all on McCarron.

Actually he is above average and that's been proven time and time again. The only debate you can bring up is that maybe AJ is more above average than Andy is, but Andy is an above average QB in the NFL plain and simple.

All I can say is, I hope this isn't indicative of what every regular season game is going to be like.

And I'm not talking about what happened on the field last night.

That's the way it has been the past couple years so get prepared.

I thought the biggest mistake last night was a Marvin mistake. At the end of the half AJ completes a pass to the 10 or so with ten seconds left. AJ lines them up to spike it and settle for the FG. ML calls their last TO with 4 seconds while AJ is spiking it. Just plain dumb. Call the TO with 10 seconds run a play to the endzone complete it or into the stands. You still have time for a FG. I realize there is a possiblity for a sack or INT, but I take the shot. It is Preseason, holy moly, who cares if he gets sacked or intercepted, you gotta see what you have anyway.

Maybe in a close regular season game, but I am inclined to go for it then. Just a bad mistake by ML IMO.

Just because I think they should move on from Dalton if they fail this year. Doesn't mean I think they will. The Bengals are loyal to a fault even to old players past their prime.

So my point is say they keep Dalton the next 5 years but still never do better than just making the playoffs. Would you still say it was the right move? My point is when is enough of the same status quo.

Now it seems even You and other Bengals fans have fell into the wait a year or two to long to move on. Bengals always seem to be a year or two behind on when they make a move. Now with the basic do or die stance some of you all are taking with Dalton it's the same thing. If Dalton doesn't take this team the next step or at least look better in those big moments after year 7. Why should we wait until year 8, 9 and 10 and see if it finally changes. Just like with keeping Marvin, keeping Dalton after 7 years and expecting a different result after the same results is not right imo. When a backup qb with less experience did what Dalton has made a living of. He beat the teams he was suppose to beat, and quite honestly looked better than Dalton in the situation Dalton struggles in. Even though it was still losses he did perform better in those situations. So why not after this year make that change and go with McCarron if Dalton still fails in those situations.

Like I said... you'd ride with Dalton for a SB win and I'd ride with McCarron for a SB win...

We just disagree on which QB gives them the best chance... in reality, we both know that neither guy gives them a great chance... this team has too many holes to fill... on the field and on the coaching staff.

Good to know you are on the McCarron train now since you said you would ride with McCarron for a super bowl win :D

It's typical Marvin Lewis in those situations. Horrible with clock management every year. He struggles knowing when to go for it, and when to be conservative. I forget what game it was last year. A team punted to the Bengals. The Bengals has the ball at their own 35 yard line with 40 seconds left but all three timeouts. It was a game we were moving the ball well too. Most teams try to at least get in field goal range or something. The Bengals sat on those three timeouts and took a knee. Just always conservative.

All I can say is, I hope this isn't indicative of what every regular season game is going to be like.

Eh regular season it's not to bad, at least not on my end on the subject. Dalton usually does good in most regular season games because they are at 1 and 4. So can't really disagree with him on those games. So usually there is much more discussion on the game or what Marvin Lewis did to mess things up with time management.

Good to know you are on the McCarron train now since you said you would ride with McCarron for a super bowl win :D

I don't think he's as good as Dalton , but if Dalton goes down and McCarron can get it done... yeah, I'm good with that.

And those numbers would be the same or worse if McCarron were the QB. That is the bottom line for me. I just don't think McCarron is better than Dalton.

You have zero idea if McCarron would do better or worse in those situations. I think to many of you completely down play the importance of leadership and mindset of a qb in those situations. In terms of pure passing I do believe Dalton has a little stronger arm, and is more athletic. There is no argument from me there. However being better there doesn't mean he is better for those big game situations. As bad as Dalton looks in those big games, I am not sure how people can say his mindset for those moments may not be the best. Which if your qb can't handle those moments how can he lead a team to handle those moments. At the end of the day I do think McCarron like Dalton would beat the teams he is suppose to. Just comes down to which qb in the big moments could handle it better. So far with a lot less experience, even though they ended with losses too. McCarron did show better than Dalton has most of his career in those moments.

As for the pass no doubt. Someone mentioned that pass is why he is the backup. My only argument is yes it was a bad pass. However his bad pass was to a guy who won't make the team. Dalton makes a lot of those same bad passes. However when he makes a bad pass it's thrown to the likes of AJ Green who snags the ball out of the air out of nowhere to make a bad pass look routine. If Dalton throws the same exact pass McCarron did but throws it to Green, Green probably makes on of those snagging long arm diving catches and no one is the wiser to how bad of a pass it was. So for someone to say that's why he is The backup is foolish, because just imagine how many more picks Dalton throws if throwing to guys who won't make the team.

We will probably never agree, but I don't think anyone said great. He is a solid NFL QB.

I've never said he wasn't solid either, but it doesn't mean he is what this team needs. He could go to Denver, Seattle, and probably even Pittsburgh and be successful because they already have a winning mindset with their players. They as a team know how to handle the big moments. Here we have a whole team who doesn't, so it's even more important to have a qb who is a leader who can handle those moments. Which those big moments are not something he has a good mindset for. The Bengals need their qb to be their leader not their Left Tackle like it was Daltons first 6 years.

So I don't think Dalton is good. I just don't know if he is the qb this team or I should say Franchise needs to get over the top. They need a qb with a different mindset. A mindset we haven't seen since Boomer.
