After thinking about this some more, I dont think the city/county should support the building of a new stadium. This team is only 2 years old, they can play at Nippert. If that means no MLS so be it, again, the team is 2 years old.

MLS just put out a statement that if the Crew leave Columbus, Columbus can put in an emergency bid for a new team, with no MLS franchies fees.

Hamilton County today approved $15M for a parking garage for FCC. Now waiting for Cincinnati City Council to take the full vote on Cranley's infrastructure proposal.

It’s false scarcity to entice fans and shares in SUM to entice owners into a league that has never once made a profit on its own.

Cincinnati City Council just voted 5-3 to provide $37M to infrastructure. Looks like Oakley is a done deal now.

 

No idea how they will make up the difference of $30ish million for the remaining infrastructure.

Detroit IMO is almost certainly in the #4 spot.

 

Sacramento appears to be the odds on favorite, so I assume they get one of the bids.

 

That leaves Cincinnati and Nashville. I just don't see anything that Nashville can offer that Cincinnati doesn't bring to the table. A committed fan base and the support that Cincinnati has, has to put them over the top IMO.

 

If I had to bet, I'd put my money on FCC getting the other bid. At least I'm incredibly hopeful they do.

FC Cincinnati to school board: Let's talk about a West End stadium

In the first public activity on the stadium location since the team made its pitch to MLS in December, FCC General Manager and President Jeff Berding sent a letter to the Cincinnati Public Schools board Monday night.

 

"One of the neighborhoods we have considered is the West End," Berding wrote in the two-page letter, which The Enquirer obtained from someone involved in the stadium planning.

 

"There are multiple locations in that neighborhood where the private investment of the stadium could generate considerable economic impact that would be positive in the West End and overall for our city," the letter says. "While we have not formally moved ahead as we await MLS feedback, we do want to keep as many options on the table as possible ..."

 

The letter is addressed to Cincinnati School Board President Carolyn Jones.

 

"We would welcome, at the appropriate time, a meeting to discuss a potential FCC-CPS partnership in the event we choose to pursue a West End stadium location," the letter says. "In a similar manner FCC developed a win-win partnership with the University of Cincinnati that made Nippert Stadium our home."

^ So the whole point in this stadium deal is to get FCC it's own dedicated soccer stadium, which (as I understand it) is one of the requirements for them to be awarded with a MLS franchise. So they discuss in the article that a stadium on the West End would likely require that they get the property currently occupied by Taft High School's stadium, and they talk about a partnership similar to the one between UC and FCC. Where's the partnership if they're taking away the football stadium from a landlocked Taft High School and then building themselves a new stadium that is intended to be dedicated to use by FCC?

That is how I read it. There was a thread on BGP a few weeks back about sharing stadiums in metropolitan areas. Maybe this stadium serves the needs of FC Cincinnati and the local high schools for games?

I would guess this is more than likely what they're hoping for. They're working on a backup plan for the Oakley site, which FCC contractually "controls" at current. 6 or 7 years ago I bid and won the contract to build the Cinemark Theater all of like 800 feet from the Cast-Fab plant, which was vacated and has been turned into the Oakley site for the FCC stadium. I can tell you for sure that the geotechnical (soil bearing) conditions in that vicinity are absolute 100% horrible. I can't personally verify whether or not it was true, but was told that the whole vicinity of the Oakley site was a dump back around the turn of the 19th/20th century. As a result, we had to drill an absolutely insane number of auger-cast piles down to good bedrock at the site in order to support the foundations for the movie theater.

 

Just conjecture, but I wonder if FCC is getting to the fine print involved with the Oakley site and realizing that the sitework is over and above what they wanted, and are starting to eye other options.
