While people may not like what the Gov said, let's be honest, if we don't take one or the other position I posted (basically legalize dealers or execute them), prayer is going to be more effective than anything else we have tried. Arresting and jailing dealers has done NOTHING but given them more street cred. Government spending on stimulus in high crime areas has basically be money flushed down the toilet in terms of stopping gang activity - why take a job when society glorifies gang life and it pays a heck of a lot more. So any better idea? Or see you in the chapel?

We agree on this. Prohibition didn't work, but considering the number of counties in KY that still hold fast to such a foolish concept I doubt we will be seeing much done on that end in our state.

I almost wish we still had doctors writing out dozens of fake scrips for OxyContin these days. The heroin dealers that have moved in behind them are of a far nastier sort and a big reason for the spike in homicides in the city.

 

If I could pick two things right now that I think would help the situation immediately:

 

1) Police Chief Conrad has to go. This isn't on the governor or Frankfort but on Mayor Fischer. The decision to eliminate flex squads was a huge error in judgment and nobody on the ground has near enough local information anymore. Replace him with someone with a better idea of what policing a community needs to look like.

 

2) More money for the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. They need money for expanded drug treatment, faster processing of cases both for families they're trying to keep together and the ones in which termination of parental rights is the only solution. End the cycle some of these children of dealers and/or addicts are going through.

 

There needs to be a whole lot more than that, including massive reforms of the way we handle education, business investment, job growth, abandoned property, community involvement, and a hundred other facts of everyday life, but those are longer-term, IMO.

That's what killed me about the whole thing. There's a church on every block in West Louisville full of honest-to-goodness, turn-the-other-cheek, repent-for-His-day-is-near, bona fide Christians. And they just aren't praying enough?!? Man that's just unbelievable.

I'll admit I don't have the same grasp on his shortcomings as you obviously do, but every time he's on the news, I cringe.

That is what I was referring to. Just poking at the other side is also something I look at with disdain. Even if I loathe the left myself.

I've found that, even as a relatively progressive Democrat, the drum circle types don't like me much either. My own politics come from a belief in objective truth rooted in religious faith and filtered through a belief in liberty and pluralism that I feel is distinctly American. Any one of those phrases is typically enough for your modern progressive to start foaming at the mouth.

My personal libertarianism is definitely more secular by nature, and I have no doubt that I cause much the same response.

 

If liberals think I am an arch-conservative and conservatives think I am a flaming liberal then I am doing my job correctly.

 

To be fair I also have no problem calling out both of them especially the excesively big brother left and the legislate morality right.

 

Basically I like to act like a creature that lives under a bridge against the excesses of both.
