Several times when I was at school at Morehead.

Used one that once (briefly) housed a 4-foot rattlesnake, according to my roommate.

I should clarify.

Off-campus.

Yes. My grandparents in both sides of my family had them. My mom's parents had cistern water, and to conserve, even after having a bathroom installed, no one was allowed to use the bathroom unless sick, and you'd better be really sick

My dad's parents didn't have running water at all. They used a wood cook stove, wood heat and we hauled water by the bucket from the spring. It was the best water ever....but I digress....they had an outhouse.

My Great Grandpa Miller's place was like that, except instead of a spring he had a well dug at the back of his house and then enclosed it. We would drop a long thin pipe into the well and then crank it back up and fill up the old metal bucket that he kept full of water. That was the best water ever. He had a dipper that hung on the side of the bucket that EVERYONE used to get a drink...again BEST WATER EVER!!!

My grandparents had a galvanized bucket, and that same dipper. I'd give anything to have that dipper. I'd give anything to have another drink of that spring water too.

Still have one on my farm. Its attached to an old shed. Bees live in it now.

A cousin has our bucket and dipper...but at least it was kept.

Yep. Many times when I was a kid. One at my church. One at the Grange Hall. One at my friends house that doubled as a tool shed for rakes, hoes, etc. Probably more that I forgot.

He's giving himself way too much credit.

My wife's uncle still has one on his farm in Switzerland Co Indiana. We visit every July for a big family gathering.

Yup, used one a lot at grandparents' when staying overnight and if winter, used a "slop jar" beside bed.

I think I was 4 when we got indoor plumbing.

We had it pretty good though, even before then. Our house was directly over the well, so we had a pump at the kitchen sink. Most people had to go outside to get their water.

Yes. Had one when growing up. Used it when playing outside.

Got a good buddy whose family has some property out past Milan Indiana around Laughery Creek. No permanent structure, but they have an outhouse.

Pooped in the woods a few times instead, but have used it.

I believe that officially makes you a bear. Or is that the Pope? (I dunno... I can't ever get that punch line right)

Yes I have. As a matter of fact I have one constructed here at my house that is heading down to the farm very soon. Got tired of raining mornings. Need to cut a hole in the floor, auger the hole and get a bag of lime.

Be sure to sand the edges of the hole. Just sayin'.
