May 10, 20179 yr I'm curious how a thread titled this way is only discussing social welfare cuts. The events of yesterday might be a more problematic in healing the national divide.
May 10, 20179 yr Literally every single decision we make is made by using cost/benefit analysis. We may not realize we're doing it, but we are with everything we do. IMO, A country cannot be ran efficiently or effectively if we make decisions and ignore the cost benefit analysis of those decisions.

IMHO a country cannot be ran efficiently and effectively if we choose not to stop people from abusing the system and the abuse continues to grow and people are not held accountable.

May 10, 20179 yr I agree. IMHO a country cannot be ran efficiently and effectively if we choose not to stop people from abusing the system and the abuse continues to grow and people are not held accountable. I don't disagree. At some point the cost of achieving that outweighs the benefit though. Would you be willing to increase your taxes by $5K a year? $10K? $25K?.....At some point that increase would get to a point that wouldn't allow it to work for you. For me, that point is $1 more of my money. We pay entirely too much into social welfare programs as it is.

May 10, 20179 yr Author I'm curious how a thread titled this way is only discussing social welfare cuts. The events of yesterday might be a more problematic in healing the national divide. I picked social programs in general as a proxy for all of federal government as the attitudes that drive governing are similar for many programs. I could have just as easily picked education , healthcare or environment.

Well UKMF, as the official BGP Financial Controller, if we make decisions based upon cost benefit analysis, why do we continue to invest in social programs when poverty rates are unchanged for the last 25 years?
May 10, 20179 yr So what is your solution to stop the abuse? Not really sure, but I'd start by making changes to the cards. Should be able to limit what they can and cannot purchase with them. Sodas, candy, cigarettes, alcohol, and various other non-essential items need to be rejected when they run the card to pay.
May 10, 20179 yr Agreed we need jobs that entice these people out of social programs. Having the jobs wont entice people to do anything, the jobs are there now. You have to cut the programs back in order to get people to react.
May 10, 20179 yr Well UKMF, as the official BGP Financial Controller, if we make decisions based upon cost benefit analysis, why do we continue to invest in social programs when poverty rates are unchanged for the last 25 years? I'm the wrong person to ask about that. I've said for years on here we need to eliminate all social programs.
May 10, 20179 yr Author Yes. Consider it charity. You seem to be a supporter of that in this thread. I don't think I expressed myself clearly here. I meant to say that should I be responsible for the personal decisions of others not to pursue higher education or a trade skill? Most importantly, does the availability of public assistance factor into these decisions?
May 10, 20179 yr Well UKMF, as the official BGP Financial Controller, if we make decisions based upon cost benefit analysis, why do we continue to invest in social programs when poverty rates are unchanged for the last 25 years? Poverty rate isn't the only factor to consider when looking at whether these programs are successful. I'm not sure that decreasing the poverty rate is even the goal for many programs. I think the main goal is to make sure that those less fortunate have access to basic human needs--food, shelter, medical care etc. Many of these programs are safety nets, and in the majority of those cases, children are involved.
