Today? No. 20 years ago? Yep. And if/when I did hit something and hit it squarely, good chance it would have come off pretty hot (bat speed over 100 mph back in the day, measured). Now, it may have taken some time to get used to his "junk" and see several...maybe a LOT, of pitches, but I could have done it.

 

Someone like Chapman throwing 100? Not sure I'd have the nerve to get in the box, much less hit it.

Again, if he can get 20 big league hitters out every game, he can get a guy off the street out 40 or 50 times in a row. 99.9% of the world has never faced a big league pitcher in their lives, regardless of how much they played in high school. Hitting an 80 mile an hour fastball from a high schooler when you were practicing every day is much different from trying to hit an 80 mph fastball from a major leaguer with no practice. What you could do in school is not going to translate against major league pitching...sorry.

 

The worst major league pitcher is 100x better than anybody most people ever faced in high school.

Not doubt I could hit it, make it to first base is a different story.

If he threw solely the fastball, yeah, I'm confident I could here and there.

Bronson is going to change speeds, release points, hit spots, work you inside and out, up and down. You're not going to roll out of bed and just be able to hit him. If he's not good enough to get BGP members out, we wouldn't be watching him pitch every 5th day for the Reds. You might put some balls in play. But if he's really pitching, there ain't many of us who are going to get a real, especially if you put a wood bat in our hands.

From a pitching machine it is. From a live pitcher, it isn't. I've seen guys throw 80 with little movement that can't get anybody out. Then there are other who's ball moves a lot AND they can hit spots, and can be very hard to hit. I'm guessing Bronson's ball has at least decent movement. And if he's really pitching to you, you're going to have be able to deal with the junk. He's not going to be just chucking up 80mph fastballs down the middle.

 

But yes, i would agree, if he's just throwing 80mph fastballs, there are probably quite a few people that could put a lot of balls in play. But that's not him pitching...that's him throwing BP.

There used to be a sports show where a fan could "play 3 holes against Lee Trevino" or "a set against Jimmy Conners" etc.

 

One time this Dodgers fan wanted to bat against a MLB pitcher. So they set in up in a spring training game. Tommy Lasorda gives the guy a pep talk like "you need to believe you can hit the ball square, I don't want to see any fear in your swing, you need to make me proud and take greats cuts!!!!"..........then he goes out to the mound where the 11th pitcher on the Dodgers roster is and says, "If this guy makes contact I'm cutting you on the spot. Don't embarrass this great franchise!!!! "

Agreed, you might foul off a few but you aren't making solid contact 10+ times if he's really pitching to you.
