Not as bad as some predicted

Was only 10-3 late in the 3rd Q. CCH's D will keep them in any game. Unfortunately, turnovers occurred.

 

Not a bad showing against the #9 team in the country.

Nice effort from the Colonels.

 

Another challenge next week against Watterson.

Day 2 of the game was ugly for the Colonels. Turnovers, dropped passes.

 

Darius Ashley had 202 yards on 35 carries. IMO keeping the number 1 underclassmen in the country to under 6 yards per carry is impressive.

Bombers Rebound vs. CovCath; Win 23-3

 

The St. Xavier Bombers rebounded from their first regular season defeat in more than two years against Covington Catholic Saturday, though it took a little longer than anyone anticipated. Beginning at 7:30 Friday night, the game was delayed about halfway through the 3rd Quarter due to a thunderstorm, and later was postponed until Saturday morning. Friday night, the Bombers were able to jump out to a quick start, moving the ball down the field on both of their first two possessions. Unfortunately, they were only able to net 3 points for their efforts. On the first possession, K Danny Milligan missed a field goal wide right. Milligan would then connect from 31 on the second possession. Those first two possessions involved a heavy dose of RB Darius Ashley for the Covington Catholic defense. Ashley carried the ball 15 times for 96 yards on those two possessions, which also took a great deal of time off of the clock. For the game, Ashley had 35 carries for 203 yards, his first 200-yard game of the season. At the time of the field goal, the game was already 3 minutes into the second quarter.

 

Two possessions later, St. X got into the end zone for the first time of the night on a Darius Ashley 1-yard touchdown run on 3rd-and-Goal. On that drive, Ashley and RB Luca Romeo split most of the work, with Ryan Morris adding in a 13-yard completion to Danny Milligan, as the Bombers took it in from the Colonel 40 yard line. Unfortunately, on the next possession, a previously sterling St. X defense bent a bit, committing two penalties on the drive, one of which set up a 42-yard field goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the half.

 

In the second half, Covington Catholic received the kick and, after both teams traded punts on their first possessions, began to move the ball in the second. The Colonels got all the way down to the Bomber 44 until, as they did all game, the Bomber defense forced a mistake. On the Bomber 23 yard line, CB Ross Morand picked off a pass, giving the Bombers back both the possession as well as momentum. The X offense was then able to capitalize on that momentum, but it would take a little longer than most expected. After Darius Ashley ran for 13 yards and a first down on the first play of the possession, lightning was spotted within 15 miles of Ballaban Field and, thus, according to OHSAA Rules, play had to be suspended. At the time, there were 5:53 remaining in the 3rd Quarter. Play resumed the next day at 11 AM. On that drive, the Bombers would attain 3 more first downs before Danny Milligan kicked a field goal less than 10 seconds into the 4th Quarter to put St. Xavier ahead 13-3. The Bombers would add one more field goal later in the game after Tyler Gagnon recovered a fumbled punt on the Covington Catholic 17 yard line. When the Colonels got the ball back, they were again able to drive down the field but, again, the Bomber defense forced a turnover, this time an interception by CB Eric Robbe on the St. Xavier 22 yard line with just under 5 minutes remaining in the game. By this time, the game was no longer in doubt. But the Bombers would put the final nail in the coffin on the ensuing possession. Backup QB Billy Rumpke came in to lead the Bombers on a drive down the field, completing a couple of passes for big yardage, one to Nick Owen and another to Luca Romeo. Ultimately, Romeo was the one who took it in from 3 yards out for a Bomber touchdown. After a Danny Milligan extra point, the score was 23-3 with less than 2 minutes remaining.

CovCath played good against a top ranked team in the Nation!

Ashley's awful good; he did quite well against a Lakelyn team with 13 Div I players, as did the rest of the Bombers.

 

He's head and shoulders better than any player in NKY, regardless of class.

I was under the impression that he was considered the top prospect, but I haven't found anything to back it up, so I guess not.

I called a score of X 28, CCH 3.

 

CovCath's defense is fast, and they find the ball quickly. On the other side of the ball, they had almost no chance to score a touchdown against X. X's defense is really good, and CovCath has offensive problems.

CC will beat Highlands, and IMO will make a strong run at AAA Title.

You may be right. I'll still take Highlands in one, and possibly, both times they play. CovCath's offense isn't going to get better. I think Highlands knows what they want on offense. I'm going out on a branch here, we'll see how thick it is in time.
