So Just How Cheap Are You?

Featured Replies

A few people at work were talking about having their season tickets for Bengals or Reds near a concession stand that has their favorite kind of beer on tap..........

So (1) I would never fork over the money for season tickets and (2) say I was at a Bengals game on free tickets I would still not buy anything from the concession stand because of the price.

So how cheap are you?

1. Does $6 for a high school football game prevent you from going?

2. Does $2 for a bottle of water or pop prevent you from buying?

3. What about at the grocery store? Is there anything thing you are not going to buy because of the price?

4. What's the most you will pay for a movie ticket?

5. Will you purchase anything at a movie theater concession stand?

6. Do you purchase a pizza based on deals or stick to one chain?

7. How much are you willing to pay for a concert ticket?

8. How much does the price of a dinner item when you are dining out effects your decision on what you order?

I went to a Reds game 5 years ago and paid $9.50 for a bag of peanuts and a pop. My friends were buying beer at almost $7 a bottle. I'm sure those prices are higher now. I told them at the time that evidently the Reds or the city, or whoever owns the new stadium, must be trying to pay it off in a few years.

I live in eastern Kentucky but if I lived in the Cincy area I would have to think long and hard whether I would want to purchase season tickets (or pay-as you-go) to Reds games. Besides the nearly $10 for a pop and peanuts, my ticket that day cost $76 for a very average seat. A person would need to take out a second mortgage to frequent many Reds games. I'm sure the Bengals are worse.

1. Does $6 for a high school football game prevent you from going? No.

2. Does $2 for a bottle of water or pop prevent you from buying? Water, yes. I m not spending $2 for water.

3. What about at the grocery store? Is there anything thing you are not going to buy because of the price? I pay attention to price but buy what I want, even if it costs a little more. As long as I believe the difference and value is worth the extra cost, I will pay the extra cost.

4. What's the most you will pay for a movie ticket? I rarely go to movies, mainly because of the cost and because most movies don't require the big screen to be enjoyed. Some movies I will pay to see on the big screen.

5. Will you purchase anything at a movie theater concession stand?Never.

6. Do you purchase a pizza based on deals or stick to one chain?Combo. I look for the best deals from two or three favorites and will buy from the one with the best deal at that time.

7. How much are you willing to pay for a concert ticket? I stopped going to big name act concerts a long time ago. Prices are a major reason why.

8. How much does the price of a dinner item when you are dining out effects your decision on what you order? It depends on the situation and event. I don't eat out much because of the prices. But if it is a special event, price is not an issue. In general, I try to stay under $20 and it has to be special to go over $25 for dinner.

Answers in red above. Most people probably will say I am cheap, and I probably am in my personal every day decisions. However, I always tip 20% unless service is really bad which will knock it down to 15%. I am never cheap in paying my share with others and err on the side of being generous with others. If it is something I really want to do, price is not an issue.

1. No, a lot of schools lose money on athletics, so I have no issue contributing to help them at least break even.

2. Not if I'm thirsty.

3. My wife does most of the shopping which helps save us a ton of money. I do handle most of the meat purchases and buy from a local butcher, but their prices are just as reasonable or better than Kroger.

4 and 5. This is where I am cheap. I essentially have a small theater in my home with access to movies that are currently playing in theaters, so I really have no reason to throw away money at the theater.

6. The pizza chains that I'm willing to order from are all close enough to the same that if there is a coupon available I'll just go with whichever offers the best deal.

7. Not sure on that one, it's been a while since I've bought tickets to a concert.

8. We typically cook our own meals at home (which saves a lot of money) so when we do eat out at nice restaurant we just order whatever we're in the mood for.

Funny you mention that, the last time I was at a Reds game was 2 or 3 years ago and I spent close to $100 on beer and food.

I go to a few (about 10 a year) Reds games but I am lucky in that I get free tickets from a variety of places. I always pack a small soft sided cooler with drinks and usually pick up a sub and a can of Pringles (or something similar). I very rarely by anything from concession stand. I love the Reds since they allow you to do this.

And I don't like beer enough to pay $10 a beer.

1. Does $6 for a high school football game prevent you from going? No

2. Does $2 for a bottle of water or pop prevent you from buying? No

3. What about at the grocery store? Is there anything thing you are not going to buy because of the price? No I sometimes get things based on my budget but that's based on total overall grocery bill not one item, I will put stuff back because I am only spending $50 but not because one item is a higher price, if I want or need it will buy it

4. What's the most you will pay for a movie ticket? $15

5. Will you purchase anything at a movie theater concession stand? Always a large soda, usually a popcorn too

6. Do you purchase a pizza based on deals or stick to one chain? I will grab a $7.99 dominoes carry out or litte caesars hot and ready when lazy and or broke, but do not hesitate to spend $25-$30 on a large Impellizerri's (my fave)

7. How much are you willing to pay for a concert ticket? Don't go to concerts have never bought a ticket have worked them doing concession stands as fundraiser at a Freedom Hall, probably ruined concerts for me as a lot of pop and rock acts don't sound as good live made me realize how much the studio tweaks the audio.

8. How much does the price of a dinner item when you are dining out effects your decision on what you order? A little but me being a really picky eater more determines what I eat than price

1. Yes, but only because HS football is painful to watch. I wouldn't pay $1 for a ticket.

2. No

3. Sure, I usually go for the cheaper "off" brand of things for that reason.

4. $15. That's what they cost these days.

5. Every time. Sucker for movie theater popcorn.

6. I buy what I'm in the mood for. Price never factors in.

7. Depends on who it is. Probably $100 max, but may go more for great seats to an artist I really wanna see.

8. Not at all. I'm of the belief that if the price of menu items factor into what you order, you probably shouldn't be eating out to begin with. Now price will factor into what restaurant I go to, but not what I order there.

1. Does $6 for a high school football game prevent you from going?

It did until I learned the clipboard trick.

I score a variety of Reds tickets through people I deal with at work, the best part is the majority are in the Champions Club or whatever it's called now (free food) because of that I usually have a couple beers.

The Bengals games I usually have enough beers at the tailgate it doesn't matter to me what the price is when I get inside.

The restaraunt question I always order whatever I want, but like others I'm not going to a super fancy place if I'm on a McDonalds budget.

The last nice meal I had was for my wifes birthday at Ruth's Chris and that was just a surprise as she hadn't ever been there.

No

2. Does $2 for a bottle of water or pop prevent you from buying?

No

3. What about at the grocery store? Is there anything thing you are not going to buy because of the price?

No. I buy based on value, but that takes into account several other factors besides price. Even when I was poor, price alone was rarely a determining value. For instance, I have ALWAYS bought Kraft singles instead of store brand.

4. What's the most you will pay for a movie ticket?

Similarly to the grocery question, if I feel the movie experience is a value, I will pay for it. In general, I don't go to movie theatres. My last trip was a matinee because that's when both TB&G and I could coordinate our schedules to meet.

5. Will you purchase anything at a movie theater concession stand?

Popcorn and soda

6. Do you purchase a pizza based on deals or stick to one chain?

I haven't had a chain pizza in over 10 years. I actually don't eat much pizza these days. But I will spend a pretty penny for Impellizzeri's in a heartbeat.

7. How much are you willing to pay for a concert ticket?

I recently dropped $120 per ticket for U2 tickets. Bucket list item.

8. How much does the price of a dinner item when you are dining out effects your decision on what you order?

Again, overall value vs price alone.

Even at my poorest, which was really poor, it's been about quality over price.

1. Does $6 for a high school football game prevent you from going? Yes

2. Does $2 for a bottle of water or pop prevent you from buying? At a gas station, yes, at any sporting event, no

3. What about at the grocery store? Is there anything thing you are not going to buy because of the price? 9.99 a pound for lamb is too much. I buy in bulk at Brooke's Meats. Anything more than 3.50 for a twelve pack of pop is oo much.

4. What's the most you will pay for a movie ticket? 9.00

5. Will you purchase anything at a movie theater concession stand? If I go, I want Popcorn and Sprite.

6. Do you purchase a pizza based on deals or stick to one chain? Deals

7. How much are you willing to pay for a concert ticket? Rarely go

8. How much does the price of a dinner item when you are dining out effects your decision on what you order?

A lot when it comes to paying 3.00 for pop. I'll buy a coke if it is 2.00 or less. The price of soft drinks at restaurants is ridiculous. Having a water with lemon for all family members cuts the check down about 11.00
