Dumb question, how do you know if you at the sand bar, There is a drop off on the floor of the ocean of a few feet?

Last year I was in West Palm Beach and a spear fisherman got attacked near a sand bar by a tiger shark.

You can seem them from the beach. I don't recommend swimming out to them they are pretty far from the beach usually.

I guess I don't know what a sandbar looks like cuz I don't recall seeing anything from the beach.

Not that it matters, I ain't going in deep enough to get bitten by a shark. :lol2:

I'm not a fan if I can't see my feet or what's below me. I'll stick to the pool and hopefully a swim-up bar.

This is why I only swim in the Caribbean. :lol2:

If you swim out away from the shoreline, and after about 25 yards or more, you're able to stand in waist or shoulder deep water, then you're on a sand bar. Typically, the beaches I've been to, the buoys for the boat and jetski traffic are just out beyond the sand bar.

I am a scuba diver, and I feel safer diving than I ever do wading around the beach.

You can't see sandbars them from the beach, they are under the water completely. If you walk out in the water and the water suddenly get's shallower, you are on a sandbar.

If you are on the beach and walk out about halfway between high and low tides...the water will get deep, then start to get shallow again. Like it might be neck deep then go back to knee deep. When you're in shallow water again, you're standing on top of the sand bar.

 

In this simple drawing, you should never, ever go to that second sandbar. There are also fish in that first cut between the beach and the sandbar.

Actually, you can in certain areas of the Gulf where the water is clearer. The water color will be lighter along the sandbars.

True, but in general if there is much chop on the water you can't see them. It seemed like some posters thought they would be clear from the beach, but under even the best of circumstance it's hard to see them from the beach.
