I don't think anyone of any political persuasion likes today's media. How can it be fixed?

Turn it off. Stop paying attention to it.

I stand by my previous thoughts.

The media should report the news, and only that. Leave the commentary and opinions out of it.

Never going to happen.

Never going to happen.

A big part if the downfall of the media that led us to where we are today happened when they eliminated the Fairness Doctrine in 1987. Under the Fairness Doctrine, when a media outlet presented one political view they were required to give equal time to the opposing viewpoint. Would that meet your suggested fix above? Should we reinstate the Fairness Doctrine?

In today's world I think that would lead to each party trying to talk over each other.

At least with Fox News I see them try to bring Liberal minded people on their broadcasts but it becomes almost impossible to have a conversation because each side has a different set of facts/talking points that don't even come close to matching each other.

I agree but here's the thing. The news gets reported. The Rachel Maddows and Sean Hannitys distort the reported news and that's the issue. It's easy to see what is being reported and leave it at that. People don't have to pay attention to the commentary but they choose to. People always search for the talking head saying what they want to hear. It isn't hard to take the reported news at face value.

The media doesn't need to change, WE, our society needs to change.

As long as we salivate at the first indication of something negative towards what we don't like, they are going to keep feeding it, regardless of whether it's true or not. A lot of us need to take a good hard look in the mirror and be honest with ourselves on this issue...

Not really, the Media decides what is news and what isnt, and thats what they report.

Here's my issue with this though. I don't trust anything that comes from anyone associated with Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, etc. The people PP92 mentioned are precisely why. The anchors and reporters and hosts all interject their opinions into everything they report. There is no straight fact-dumping any more IMO.

Well stated! I was trying to figure out how to say just this. As long as people like Rush, Rachel, Sean and Glenn get paid to celebrity dollars spout their "opinions", and people take their "opinions" as fact, there will be a problem. The issue isn't with the real news media. It is with us, the consumer, delighting in nothing more than being hyperbolic and not caring what the real truth is, versus the sensationalized, and fake outrage.

What if media was categorized and content was restricted by what category they were in? For example, if you are going to offer primarily opinion shows on your channel then you are not allowed to be called a "news" station. You make news stations limit opinion to 10% or less of their content.

If your content is going to be more than 10% opinion, then you are now an opinion or commentary channel and use of the word news for content on your channel is highly restricted.

The media doesn't need to change, WE, our society needs to change.
