Would like to see what might happen if there was a public & private class. Know this issue has been beaten to death and clearly is NOT going to happen in KY. However, almost half of the teams listed above are private. Football appears (minus Bowling Green) to be dominated by private schools as well.

Just for the record, I never said I wanted classes. I just asked the question, if it was needed. I like only having 1 state champion, however I am not sure having half the games in the 1st round of regionals be blow outs is a good thing.

Football?? Highlands, Beechwood, Mayfield, Male, Manual, Scott County, Paducah Tilgman, Boyle Co, Johnson Central, Belfry, Central (sure I'm missing some) would all beg to differ. AND there are several private schools that are average in football each year.

This is right up there with, "Lets give everyone a trophy" at the end of the year OR "Let's not hurt anyone's feelings". This crap is what's making this generation weak and not ready for the real world. When you go for a job interview do they break the potential employees up into classes based on your qualifications? NO, you get put into the pot with everyone else and you compete for the same job. Life if tough and at times unfair. DEAL WITH IT!

 

I hear this all time, and I simply believe it's junk. Every generation thinks the younger generation is soft. Kids are a lot smarter than we give them credit for, and I'm pretty sure realize getting an extra game isn't a great award. And getting blown up sucks, and maybe even teaches a lesson in itselg. And, really if you do your job as a parent, coach, etc., they'll understand what the world is like and that there aren't any free rides. No one's life has been sent along the wrong path because they got a participation trophy, or got to play in a playoff game after having a lousy season. Participation awards have been around my entire life (I'm soon to be 47). While sports can teach valuable lessons, it really is just a game. If it were more than that, kids that didn't play sports would be doomed for failure and never have a chance to succeed in life.

Passtheball correctly mentioned the now-neutered Indiana state tournament, which formerly was THE best high school tourney, with Kentucky's being a close a close second. But now the IHSAA tourney(s) are watered-down and lackluster versions of the past. Now Kentucky's is the best, but whiners want to lessen it for selfish reasons. The wisest choice is to not to go down that road. School size is not the issue at hand. The greatest factor to address is those schools that "collect talent" vs. those that do not or cannot. That is what makes an unlevel playing field. "Collecting of talent" is the problem in many regions, as schools that cannot are loosing their kids to other schools.

Do you really believe KY's Basketball tourney is the best?? On the boys side last year 15 games, only two decided by less than 5 points. On the girls side, only 4 decided by less than 5. 9 were decided by 15 or more. Is that really great basketball? I'm not saying classes would fix the blowout issue. But not having classes isn't doing anything to make the tournament better, let alone making it the "best".

I totally agree with this statement. You can take it down to the regional level as well.

After playing an entire season the best teams only reward is playing another top team in the first round of the playoffs. If the best teams knock each other off in the early rounds you set yourself up for blowout semi-finals and championship game. Last year Butler blew Franklin County out in the Championship game.

The real problem that makes this argument so annoying is that every time it comes up everyone just argues a position that benefits their interest. The fans of small schools want classes while the fans of big school believe that multiple champions diminish the value of their championship. The public schools want the private schools in their own class. If your school is not a destination, then you want to do away with transfers. I find it ironic that in an earlier post in this tread, a poster started off by belittling the request for classes as coming from adults “who can't stand that their kiddos weren't victorious enough to cut down the nets “ and then turns around and says that collecting of talent needs to be eliminated. Why? Clearly because their school wasn’t victorious enough to cut down the nets. I don’t know what the best solution is, but it will not be discovered by those who can only see their own interests.

I would say there aren't very many small school fans want classes in basketball. I don't know anyone from my hometown that wants classification and it has never come up in conversations in my 50 years of watching high school basketball.
