Is Bell County trying to lure back Taylor County's Dudley Hilton?

Featured Replies

Dudley coaches at a school that graduates 225-265 annually, and he has a 40 player roster if every one is healthy, in 4a, but that cant be his fault, no way! Did anyone really expect him to drill 4a and add to his jewelry? no. However, I, personally, did expect him to field a highly competitive team, and that is not what I have seen. I was not around the game when he was running the mountains so all I have ever known Dudley to do is lose. That sounds super harsh, but it is what i have experienced. I know, very well, the talent that Taylor County has, and a coach that would adapt his game to his athletes would compete at a much higher level at that school. Forgive me if I do not share the sentiments of the majority here. His accomplishments of an earlier time are very impressive, and he should be given the respect he earned for those years, yet still, what have you done for me lately duds?

Taylor County hasn't been the same since a superintendent listened to parents in 2001 and fired Brad Todd.

Coach Hilton is a good football coach and Taylor County is lucky to have him. They may not win a district title or anything else, but he will and has continued to make the football program better at Taylor.

So you think the next guy will get that? Pretty sure his predecessor didn't earn in Dudley's ballpark either.

Going to have to pay more to replace a legend.

It seems like TC is competitive in basketball, baseball, and soccer. It wouldn't be the 1st time that football plays 4th fiddle. Hilton seems to have improved the program from where they were for several years before. How many multi sports kids does he have? Have the other 3 youth and middle school programs/ sports steered them away from football?

TC had 2 winning seasons since 2000 (1 in 3A and 1 in 4A) before this year with a lot of 1-4 win season in there. The argument of where are the wins (and the kids) started long before Hilton arrived. He has won 12 games in 2 seasons and venture to say he would be increasing from there next year.

I went and did a little Eric Graves/Dudley Hilton comparison, and I want it to be known that is all I'm doing. So, if you read into it one way or another....that's on you. I personally know both men....one well...one really well. You can't argue Dudley's success over his entire career; to do that is foolish. And while his style of play is far from popular these days (why I have no idea, b/c there are a crap load of offensively challenged teams out there who are more "modern"...but, they get a pass-no pun intended- for whatever reasons).

Hilton

Record: 16-17

Playoff wins: 0

Record vs. Campbellsville: 1-1 (Graves coached in the '14 game. His last at TC)

Record vs. LexCath/Campbellsville: 0-2

Wins over teams w/ winning record: 1

Graves

Record: 13-22

Playoff wins: 0

Record vs. Campbellsville: 3-1

Wins over teams with winning records: 2

Record vs. LexCath/Boyle: 0-6

(I mention the Boyle/LexCath W-L because I think that Taylor loses to them regardless of who the coach is, and both did- one just more than the other due to the amount of time they were in the same district)

Common Opponents Comparison

Barren County

Graves: 1-2, Hilton: 1-1

Campbellsville

Graves: 3-1, Hilton: 1-1

Boyle County:

Graves: 0-3, Hilton: 0-1

Green County:

Graves: 0-1, Hilton: 3-0

LaRue County:

Graves: 1-0, Hilton: 3-0

LexCath:

Graves: 0-3, Hilton: 0-1

Marion County

Graves: 0-3, Hilton: 3-0

Mercer County

Graves: 0-3, Hilton: 0-3

......not a lot of difference there. What one doesn't have, the other kinda does. There is only TWO opponents that BOTH had played the same amount of times to date, and that is Mercer and Green. Neither have/had beaten Mercer, while Graves went 0-3 vs Marion County while Hilton has gone 3-0.

One could make the argument that LexCath/Boyle not being on the schedule for Hilton's tenure is the clear cut difference between the two. Put those two monster's on Taylor's schedule the last couple years which would account for FOUR games, and his/their record is is likely 12-21. IF that's the case; then advantage Graves' by 1%.

I haven't compared the overall win% of teams they have both beaten, but the eyeball test tells me it's the same.

I also haven't compared the overall strength of schedule vs all opponents in their respected tenures, but here is GUESSING that advantage (or disadvantage) goes to Graves (the Boyle/LexCath effect).

I think the BIGGEST thing you can take away from this is the largest pink elephant there is in the room when trying to have success at MANY of our rural-county schools in this state: Hope/Try to play people worse than you.

I am no fan of his or Taylor co but He has won his share at Taylor. No coach would go in there and win 70%, the talent simply isn't there to do it.

However, I wouldn't be shocked to see them compete for a regional title in 2-3 yrs

Not enough to where it will ever be considered a "football school."

Is there really any "difference" from school system to school system?

Absolutely, when you break things down into different criteria.

Well, enlighten me to what those things might be Captain Vagueness

1- Some schools make it a priority to get coaches/teachers in the building, others do not.

2- Some schools fund football significantly better than others.

3- Some schools have in school weights, some do not.

4- Some schools prioritize facilities, others do not.

In my opinion, those are the four things that matter the most that schools will handle differently.

Thanks to the Coach for taking care of that for me. :thumb:

1. Which is better in the building or not?

All of the things you mention do make a difference. However, the things you mentioned can't be promised to a perspective coach to entice them to come to their school. Or, I should say that if they are promised anyone in education long enough should know they would have to see it to believe it. Just saying you are going to spend more money on facilities, prioritize football, or have a curriculum change to offer a weightlifting class are not things that just get done because one person says so or promises it.

Hilton already knows what is in place at Bell County. What can they do to "lure" him back? Meaning what can they "offer" Mr. Hilton that is not already known or available to any other coach that coaches there.

Being in the building is better because it allows the footballs staff to build relationships with the kids and faculty.

You make a good point on schools following through on their promises. For it to be a good situation, the AD, Principal & Superintendent need to be on the same page and willing to make happen the things a new coach believes are needed for the program to be successful.

To my knowledge, Coach McCreary is still at Bell County. I met him this season and wish him the best.

There will be some people willing to offer him "compensation" through other channels that was not available to other coaches.
