I'm one of the most pro gun people you'll ever meet. But there is a major flaw in allowing checked ammunition as well as having baggage areas open to the public without having to pass through metal detectors.

 

I do believe that people should be able to travel with their firearms in a checked bag, but they should have to leave the ammo at home. It's not that big of a deal to buy ammo once you reach your destination. Also, anyone entering the baggage claim area from the outside should have to pass through metal detectors and security just like people entering the airport for a flight. I know it's not a complete solution because evil people will always find a way. But now that I'm becoming more familiar with how checked weapons are handled and the rules, it just seems idiotic to me.

So you are fine with gun rights and someone conceal carrying in a mall or Wal-Mart or where ever. What stops them from pulling out a gun and shooting one of those places up? Why is the non-secure area of an airport different?

But with just reasonable laws, rules, whatever, THIS incident probably.would not have happened. Could have but probably would not have. That is enough for me. Why make it easy? There is my reason, you will not like it and we will disagree, but that is enough of a reason for me.

 

I get it, there is no circumstance where you don't think you should carry with ammo. That makes me all wrong in your eyes. Cool.

Except now there is.

 

They can still come back and shoot up the baggage claim area once they go buy their ammo.

But why, especially after this incident where this is exactly how this crime was committed, continue to allow that? It's beyond irresponsible IMO.

Like I mentioned before your not going to stop evil. I'm fine with people carrying most anywhere. However, if we are not going to allow the general law abiding population carry in certain places, such as an airport, lets not make it so easy for people with bad intentions to do so. What I'm getting at and I mentioned it in the post you quoted, is that the non secure area of the airport should be secure, just like the rest of the airport.

Why not just provide the same security measures at the baggage claim area as the rest of the airport? Along with not allowing people to carry ammunition in their baggage. Seems like a simple solution to me. Okay, it may not be a solution because as I mentioned before there is always a way, but it would certainly make it a lot harder than going to the bathroom and loading your gun after you get off the plane.

I read a report that the shooter went to the FBI in november claiming he was being forced to fight for ISIS.

So it would stop someone from bringing the ammo with them. They instead have to hit the nearest Wal-Mart then come back and shoot the place up.

 

Yes. Because it's one step harder to complete the plan. Another step that might allow him to be stopped.

The idea that him not being allowed ammo would have ZERO impact here is mind boggling to me. I don't even understand how one could come to that conclusion.

Providing the same security in the baggage claim area's as there is in the main terminal's would be the first step.

I guess I disagree with the no ammo thing. Last time I went on a hunting trip in Minnesota (been years) I checked my guns and all my ammo. Never thought twice about it. We flew from MSP on a little puddle jumper to the Hunting area so had I not had ammo with me, not sure what I would have done.
