Watusi Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 If you wonder what is special about Belfry, take a few minutes and watch this clip. Coach Haywood talks about the Belfry community and the uniqueness of this little blue collar corner of the Earth. As you listen to him speak, you actually will see that Philip Haywood is one of the greatest reasons for the success of this town and the people in it. I can't measure the impact he has had on Belfry, and me personally. It is easy to see why his players love him and why they play so hard for the Mighty Pirates.
Cats3x Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Thanks for sharing. Coach Haywood is the man. Phenomenal coach and from the brief time I've spent around him a phenomenal person.
UK#1fanisback Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Do they have any transfers from West Virginia?
Purple88 Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Wow! Very inspirational! I can clearly see why Belfry has been so successful for so long! Hope he is able to continue for a long time. Also hope I get to make a game at Pond Creek sometime.

Purple Nation Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Concessions on me and I will save you a seat Wishing the Purples and the Pirates could somehow play against one another a year or two. I think both programs respect one anothers rich history. Both teams would win and/or lose the matchup but would remain classy in victory or defeat. Thanks for posting. Unfortunately, not all programs have the quality coaches that a Belfry or a Bowling Green has. Not just x and o's but coaches who helps mold kids into productive young men. Would love to see them play!
JIM SEYMOUR # 85 Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Please pardon my ignorance - if this has been previously discussed elsewhere... Could someone please explain the origin of the nickname ? thanks
ATLCat Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Please pardon my ignorance - if this has been previously discussed elsewhere... Could someone please explain the origin of the nickname ? thanks Pond Creek? That is the creek that runs through the heart of the Belfry community
Watusi Posted December 8, 2016 Author Posted December 8, 2016 Could someone please explain the origin of the nickname ? To add to ATLCat's post, Belfry is just a rural community, not incorporated, no official city except for Williamson, WV, which sits in the middle of part of Belfry's district, albeit across the tug river. If you drove to all of Belfry's school district, it would take you the better part of half a day. There are 4 major areas, Big Creek, Turkey Creek, Blackberry Creek all are outliers and the major artery that flows directly through Belfry is Pond Creek. Pond Creek flows into the Tug River, which is the border between KY and WV, just a few hundred yards from Belfry High School. The unofficial story goes that leading up to the turn of the 20th century, logging was a major industry in the area. They used to dam up the creek and fill it with logs that would then be floated down the Tug to the Ohio River. At those times the creek would fill up into the bottom lands and resemble a big pond, and thus the name Pond Creek.
AtlPirateFan Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 As ATLCat stated the creek connects most of the community that form the Belfry fan base. The "City" of Belfry if you could call it that is very very tiny, if you look it up on Google maps the city proper is a small stretch that basically houses a gas station, post office, health department, fire dept and the original high school (now the middle school). The new high school resides just north of Belfry in South Williamson, KY. Pond Creek ties all these together, it runs behind the school and it and its tributaries pretty much run through all the areas that has kids who attend the High School. You add in all that to the fact that people like ATLCat and myself follow the team yearly from far away and you have a situation where the name Pond Creek Nation truly identifies the Belfry fans.
Watusi Posted December 8, 2016 Author Posted December 8, 2016 Ahe "City" of Belfry if you could call it that is very very tiny, if you look it up on Google maps the city proper is a small stretchTruthfully, you can't call it a city at all. Just a small community that is part of the Pike Co government. A small dot on the map (but a big place in our hearts, lol)
ATLCat Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Truthfully, you can't call it a city at all. Just a small community that is part of the Pike Co government. A small dot on the map (but a big place in our hearts, lol) Belfry in itself is not even a true one stoplight town. That stoplight blinks yellow. LOL It surprises a lot of people that Belfry is not an Independent School. County School all the way. I really never gave it much thought but there are not hardly any county schools that are named after a specific town or community.
