Hopkinsville, Prestonsburg & Betsy Layne are the only ones other than Belfry that I can think of.

 

Can't speak about Betsy Lane, but aren't Hopkinsville and Prestonsburg both Independent city schools, in the same mold as Mayfield? I was 100% sure (until now) that Hopkinsville was and pretty sure Prestonsburg was too. Color me shocked if that's not correct.

Prestonsburg is part of the Floyd County School System as Hoptown is to Christian County.

 

I'm not sure the history of P'burg, but at one time Hoptown was Independent....some 40 years or so ago (maybe more), the two school systems combined.

Betsy Layne is not an independent. There isn't an independent school system in Floyd County as far as I know. I honestly always thought Prestonsburg was just like Pikeville & Paintsville are but they are not.

I also would have thought Belfry was an independent district. That got me curious and I went to the pike county school website. I seen that there are 5 high schools in the district, but Belfry is the only middle school. Is that information correct? If so do all the kids go to Belfry Middle? Or do the Elementary schools go to 8th grade?

There are numerous Middle Schools.

 

I am not sure if Pike Central is consolidated now but it used to be Johns Creek and Mullins.Shelby Valley may be consolidated, but for decades it has been Virgie and Dorton (about as dominant of Middle School Basketball porgrams around!), East Ridge has been Millard, Feds Creek, and Elkhorn City.

 

Phelps and Pikeville only have one Middle School of the same name.

Belfry is the only middle school, grades 6-8, in Pike County School District. All the other schools in the county are true elementary schools, that go Kindergarten through 8th grade.

I know that Phelps does. Sheby Valley and Pike Central have middle school teams and I assume they are consolidated of kids from all their feeder schools. I am not sure about the East Ridge area.

It is, Harry. You were right and that's what Mr. Network was saying. (Both my parents--and most of my extended family--went to Lynn Camp.)

There's only one, Belfry Middle School.

 

All other schools are K-5, K-6, K-8, 7-12 or 9-12.

 

The exceptions are Phelps ES and HS, they are K-6 and 7-12 respectively. Belfry feeders are K-5, BMS is 6-8, and BHS is 9-12. Pikeville independent is set up the same as Phelps as of now.

 

Rumor has it the Belfry area will eventually have one K-8 school feeding into BHS as Blackberry is expected to close following the 16-17 school year. As the phases of construction continue the speculation is that Bevins and BMS will follow suit and eventually occupy the Varney/Southside flood zone. If you're from Belfry you know exactly what I mean.

I love the people at Belfry and Coach Haywood, however I will say with good confidence, the Pike County BOE has been great to Belfry over the last few decades. I'm curious to see how things will play forward when a guy who doesn't have Belfry ties sits in the big chair.
