@Hatz is right they had a convoluted tie breaker system. I was wondering about the decision not to use it for that game.

 

Maybe be you're right and the stakes were too high to apply it there.

 

This seems as logical as any.

 

The field was in miserable condition, and the weather was even worse. They decided a tie was the admirable thing to do.

What's ironic when I looked at it was Flaget was automatically in the title game by winning the City title but TJ had to play a 4 team tourney to represent the County. In the Final AP poll Thomas Jefferson was voted #1 and Flaget was voted #2.

 

In that same year Trigg County came out of nowhere and won the Class A. I didn't know Harrodsburg was #1 going into the playoffs but lost to Trigg in the Semi-finals. Trigg blanked Glasgow, beat Harrodsburg 32-6 and defeated Lynch to win the title. Pretty impressive.

I think Flaget was over near the west side of town and combined with Bishop David to make Holy Cross. I could be wrong.

1971 Flaget and Thomas Jefferson. Flaget never received their duplicate trophy promised them by the KHSAA. Flaget would be gone less than 3 years later. They were left to rot by the Archbishop of Louisville. They had opportunities to move and he refused to allow it.

 

TJ players trotted off with the trophy and Flaget players thought they lost per an eye-witness and proud Flaget Alumnus.

 

All-male BD and all-female Angela Merici combined to form Holy Cross several years after Flaget's demise.

Thomas Jefferson was one of a few Louisville schools that closed around 1980 (Westport, Stuart, Durrett, Ahrens, maybe another one or two). I'm not sure of the reasoning other than this came right after the busing issues and perhaps there was an overall reorganization of the school system. Hopefully one of our Jefferson County posters can shed a little extra light on this.

Bet the current rosters would have some pretty big boys (old men) at just about every position.

That's awesome. Is he still living? If so, I would love to read his account of everything we are discussing here.

@Jason Frakes this would make a great off-season historical interest piece, especially for those living in Louisville
