In my opinion, just a terrible decision. The judge and the IHSA did not do the right thing.

 

I disagree 100%. I think this was the correct decision. Sometimes bad things happen and people don't get their way. And I do agree that anything other then this decision would have been a slippery slope.

 

As I said earlier, we all want perfect officiating. It will never happen. This was an officials error and I do feel bad for the kids that were hurt but hat's life.

If this were baseball, it would have been settled properly. The losing team files a protest and the game is finished under protest. The ruling body reviews the protest afterward and makes the correct decision. Since this is not a judgement call situation but a rules interpretation situation it would have been settled correctly. Maybe there should be a protest provision for situations like this in football as well.

The ONLY time that a court should get involved w/ sports is where an unsportsmanlike play is so egregious that it leads to injury (think using hockey sticks as weapons, ball bats, or swinging your helmet at the head of unsuspecting opponent.)

Has nothing to do with getting you way. This wasn't a blown call. There is no slippery slope. The rules of the game were not followed by the officials. I don't think any is looking for perfect officials. There will always be arguments on blown calls, spots, PI, or anything where judgement comes into play. Team won the game within the rules of the game. The officials screwed up and cost them the game.

So, if you're the "winning" coach and one of your players comes up to you and basically asks if you agree with the way the game turned out...what do you say?

 

If you say that you were just following what the officials on the field said...then you've now lost all rights to protest or criticize officials from here on out. Because you've just justified that it's okay for them to miss calls and make mistakes, as long as they benefit you.

I find it amazing that In a game where you have 5 officials, one of them doesn't step in and say, "Hey guys, this isn't right." All an official ever wants to tell a coach is read the rules however I've seen at least two situations this year where a rule interpretation was completely wrong and none of the 5 got it right. After the games were over and other officials were brought in to talk about the call, they found out they were wrong. The biggest issue with most officials is that they think they are infalable and couldn't possibly be incorrect on a rule or call. The IHSAA needs to get this right.

I'm curious of the group dynamic in football. Maybe the white hat has so much juice that others either a)didn't speak up that they were wrong or b)did but the white hat overruled.

How is this different than Highlands using the courts in Mike Mitchell issue? If the IHSAA makes their ruling and you don't agree isn't the court the only option left?

That's a shame. This should have been an easy one for the IHSAA. The game was over.

 

To be clear, the court made the right decision. The IHSA did not. Court should not have been involved.

The game is decided on the field regardless of missed calls.

 

You are missing the point, the game WAS decided on the field. This was not a missed call. The game had ended. It was over. Then officials wrongly tacked on another play. This was not a typical judgment call scenario.

Agree but disagree. Whats the contract with the officials association say? There may be nothing the state association can do because of this. Which means you have to go the court's route. Because this was a case of officials didnt do their job correctly (and not a it was a subjective call issue) then it opens them up to litigation. (just like any other profession.)

 

Im surprised the courts just threw it out and didnt put a stop on the championship game till this was sorted out.

To me this is no different than a team being down 7, scoring a touchdown with 0 time left and the officials only giving them 4 points for the touchdown costing them the game.
