Here's another Courier-Journal article, published two days after the one above. The Sweet 16 pairings were listed in the bottom lefthand corner of the page.

I love the confusing nature of this headline, but it speaks loudly to Kentucky's confusing nature in general. Rineyville, of course, being in Hardin Co. Hardin, on the other hand, is a good 3-4 hours away from Hardin Co.

Of course, Madisonville is not in Madison Co.

Owensboro is nowhere near Owen Co.

Hopkinsville is somehow the next county over from Hopkins Co.

And how is the city of Marion some 4 hours away from the county it's supposed to be in?

Hickman is in Fulton County and not Hickman County.

Garrard is in Clay County and not Garrard County (although to be fair, that's a small town that didn't have a school team)

What about the 9:45 Saturday night finals

Also, wonder if @mcpapa got in on the Senior discount back then? :lol2:

Those spare quarters add up quick.

When did Dayton change its mascot from Flyers to Green Devils?

I've lived in the 14th region my entire life but I've never heard of Alven Drew, First Creek, or Stuart Robinson high schools. I know of many others that no longer exist such as Leatherwood, Hazel Green Academy, Kingdom Come, etc, but not the ones I have listed in the CJ article.

According to the Kentucky High School Basketball Encyclopedia, Alvan Drew was in Pine Ridge and closed in 1947, when it merged with Campton. First Creek was in Blue Diamond and closed in 1952 when M.C. Napier was formed. Stuart Robinson was in Blackey and changed its name to Letcher School in 1956.

Each little town having their own teams sounds so much more fun

Living in a small town...and having our own team...WAS fun. I never wore a coat to school: it was only half-a-block from my house--just bolted out the front door and into the school building. And the people of the communities were much closer then.

There are definitely advantages to having a larger school...but there are also a lot of pros that come with a smaller school as well. I'd love to see the days again of the smaller community school, where in a lot of places a school with 4-500 kids would be considered "big". Imagine the fun of having 450-500 schools all over the state battling it out to get to the state tournament. I guess the only downside to that would be it would probably give the schools in the major population centers even more of an advantage unless of course they split up as well, though they would still be larger than most...I mean, how fun would it be to have say 12-14 Lexington city schools instead of 5. I know that's not financially feasible in this day and age, but I think it would be fun.

Never. The Ohio college is the Flyers while the Kentucky high school is the Greendevils.

Ok. That's what I thought. Then the courier journal article used the incorrect mascot (see above Dayton v Newport summary).
