If we are going to be leaving teams out of the playoffs, why not leave out the least qualified teams, the ones with the lowest ratings. Makes a lot of sense. A debate of whether or not it would punish the small schools more could be held. In this example we are leaving out 29 teams, how many of them are current class A or AA teams? Is that fair?

 

As a response to this comment, the most recent postseason survey (completed by the KHSAA in the summer of 2013) saw teams in classes 2A-6A almost overwhelmingly in favor of four teams per district making the playoffs. In 1A, however, more schools only wanted two teams rather than three or four. Those 1A schools who basically said "we don't want to go to the postseason as a four-seed" - they are the ones who missed this postseason in my plan.

I, along with several others, think there are too many teams in the playoffs and that's the biggest issue...your new system, while interesting does nothing to change that and really only shuffles a few of the bottom teams in and out of the tournament. At least that's what it appears to me, maybe I am reading it wrong.

I wouldn't send to KHSAA, I would send to each head coach in state.

All fair points. I wouldn't be against placing 24 teams in each class and giving eight teams a first round bye. However, there has never seemed to be much push from administrators/coaches in favor of byes. If you went down to 16 teams per class, I think you would be leaving legitimately deserving playoff teams out of the postseason.

By the way...a freaking ton of work and thought went into this I can tell...you surely have a passion for it. I also found it interesting that my school (Anderson Co.) changes classifications in your scenario and had a much different playoff picture. I also like some of the shuffling/realigning of the districts.

If you put three or four or five teams in their "district", then they only have find 4-6 games, making it much easier to make a schedule.

 

Along with that, teams that are in the district with those powerful teams might take losses, but it would probably benefit their strength of schedule, which could help with their postseason seeding.

The deal that teams in Ohio learn fast is that you have to schedule and beat some good to great teams or you won't be ranked very high.(playoff cutoff, and home-field advantage) The alternative to that is if the majority don't schedule Trinity, BG, X, Male etc.... then they will end up scheduling each other.

There are too many teams, but at least in this proposal you wouldn't have any 4-6 teams on the outside looking in while 0-10 teams make the playoffs to get their brains beat in.

Trinity will always schedule at least two out of state teams.

 

Then they, Male, St. X and probably Ballard will always play each other. That's five games.

 

I'd venture that if allowed, T would play more out of state teams too. I think Trinity and BG would do just fine getting games. If KY schools don't want to step up and play them, then they can't complain about a low seed come playoff time.

I love it.

 

The only possible change I would make is going from 6 to 5 classes, to make each class more competitive. The top 160 teams would make for one heck of a tournament in each class in my opinion.
