Anyone with pets...issues with fleas this year?

Featured Replies

We have a long hair indoor cat, Baby, that we have had for about 12 years, and a short hair Chihuahua, Mia that we have had for about 5 years. Fleas have never been a problem. This year fleas have been terrible. Have had to treat both animals more than once, constantly wash Mia (she goes outside, the cat stays inside and never goes outside). I went to Tractor Supply Sunday to get some flea stuff again, including collars which we have never had to do before, and the young girl at the checkout counter said she had 3 dogs and that fleas have been horrible this year, worst she had seen. Any of you with pets seen/had problems with fleas this year? I don't know what it is, but it seems to have been a really bad year for pests...if you remember I posted earlier in the summer about how bad the flys had been in our area. I have had several say that mosquitoes had been really bad where they live (fortunately that wasn't the case around us). Fleas have been horrible.

Just starting to notice fleas on our chihuahuas. We had them on an oral flea tick and heart worm medicine for most of the summer, but haven't been as diligent recently in giving them their treatments.

Nope. Give them their doses of heart-worm and flea & tick meds when they're due and it's not an issue.

We did. We have two cats that never see the outside and got em some how. It's was awful to get rid of them.

I wear my collar...so, no.

I buy a chewy pill from our vet called Nexguard that takes care of our Bichon. A treatment last about 40 days. However, they're expensive, about $17 per treatment.

That's what we use. It's expensive, but a lot less expensive than it would be if they contracted ticks and the diseases that come with it.

I have to take the dog to the vet anyway...might get her a treatment of this. One should do the trick (if I can get just one pill), if it last about 40 days we should have a hard freeze by then and fleas won't be an issue for a while. I have just never had to do anything like this as fleas have never been an issue the way they are this year for whatever reason.

Our vet says that this has been one of the worst seasons for fleas in recent memory. Not so much an issue if your pets are indoors.

I can definitely believe that.

Good friend has a grooming business. He says Dawn is the best flea remover. Hit ears and private parts with Dawn before wetting the dog down, because as soon as fleas sense water they head in the ears or butt. Then wet down dog good and wash with a good amount of Dawn. I did this and worked better than any flea soap I've ever bought.

I took my puppy to the vet yesterday for something unrelated and we discussed fleas, which he didn't see any on my little guy, but ours also said that this has been one of the worst years/seasons for them.

My wife had them back in the summer, used the Dawn on her and it did the trick. Although I did have to hold her down when I did her ears.

My pup got them 2 times in the past year and a half. I finally broke down and got the prescriptions from the vet. Hasn't been a problem since.
