Should we, the United States of America, have an official nationally recognized religion?

No. The beauty of this country was it was founded without an Establishment of Religion. It was done so to protect liberties for the Nation and for the Churches.

Absolutely. Everyone should be forced to become a Roman Catholic. Missing mass on Sunday should be punishable by a fine for the first offense, with fines and jail terms for subsequent offenses. The eldest son of every family is mandated to enter the priesthood and eldest daughters are required to enter the convent.

 

Does that work for everyone else? If not, maybe we ought to rethink that national religion nonsense.

Now as to that, I think there's a marked difference between saying "There should be no national religion" and what we hear from an increasingly vocal group which suggests "Your religion should have no bearing in your public or political life."

 

I don't think Catholicism should be the national religion (We've tried that. There were schisms and reformation and a few wars with a bunch of German princes; it was awful.) but I know for a fact that my Catholicism does impact the way I see the world and the way I see what's best for the future. One's personal philosophy is derived from a number of places, not least religion, and as long as we keep sight of that fact, then I embrace those things being a part of one's public life.

When DLG was in grade school and we past St. Ann's Convent on the way to her soccer games, I always told her that's were you are going after high school. :lol2:

It shouldn't be. However, the author of this topic realizes(correctly so) that there are folks out there that would be all for making Christianity the national religion. They are probably not going to say so publicly on here, but they would like to see it happen. You can bet your bottom dollar.

There are people out there that would that would do all sorts of things, doesn't mean there is widespread or even more than a nominal amount that would support this.
