Is Class 2-A Weak?

Featured Replies

Except for the top two or three teams that always figure in. My answer to your question scbob is Yes, 2A overall is weak. JMO.

These arguments can be fruitless and speculative, but fun nevertheless. How about someone figure out some set of criterion we could go by, and then apply it to this season.

Here's mine. Since we are talking about the class as a whole, and not just a few teams at the top of each class and how they fared against one another, lets take a random sampling of 2A teams that are average or a little better-than-average, and look at how they have fared against average or better-than-average teams from other classes. I think the Region 2, District 3 schools are a good sampling (Larue County, Western, Elizabethtown, et. al.) Looking at that District, you have Larue beating John Hardin and Central Hardin (2 average or better-than-average 4A schools) and losing to Bardstown, a very good "A" school. You have Desales beating Southern, a below average 4A school, but losing to Holy Cross, a very good "A" school, and Lexington Christian, an above-average "a" school. You have Elizabethtown beating Ohio County, an average 3A school, and Central Hardin, an average 4A school. You have Western beating up North Laurel, an average 4A school, an Breathitt County, another 2A school. Christian Academy, which has had some good teams but is probably below average this year, has lost to Holy Cross and LCA.

You can give and take here and there, but it appears that 2A is doing pretty well this year against bigger classes, on the whole, but not against Class "A" teams. 2A of course has some strong teams at the top (Mercer, Russell, Belfry), but also has some traditionally strong teams that are down (Corbin, OC).

I would say, then that 2A as a class is not weak, this year, but is comparitively stronger than in year's past. I think Class A is more competetive, too, and that 4A is perhaps down a bit on top-to-bottom strength.

Just Hearsay's uneducated opinion.

Only one way to answer the question that's been raised...

After the season, go to the Massey website and compare 1A thru 4A football in Kentucky. That's as good a snapshot as you can get.

Much of what's being said in this thread is pure happenstance and irrelevance, a mighty clamor on the horizon signifying NOTHING.

You make some good points in post #32 hearsay, I may have been going on the local 2A district in my area too much. there is Russell who is very good and then not much at all.

Except for the top two or three teams that always figure in. My answer to your question scbob is Yes, 2A overall is weak. JMO.

In all fairness Old Rambler that could be said in all classes of football! Class A,2A,3A, and 4A, all have excellent teams and they all have really weak teams too! Again that Belfry team of 2004 , could beat anybody I've never seen a High School team so good and I saw the state championships last season!

Danville, Mayfield are good teams, but C'on man, do you really think they are good enough to beat Mercer Co., Russell, and Belfry. I don't!

Danville beat Mercer in their scrimmage this year although in the interest of full disclosure the contest was cut short due to time. Danville is 3-0 this year. All opponents are 3A schools (Boyle, Pulaski SW, Pulaski County). So to answer your question, yes Danville is good enough to beat the teams you outlined in your post. Does that mean they automatically would? No. But, they are definitely capable of it.

You have your opinion I have mine, see you in 2 weeks. ;)

You must think Ashland is an average 3A team and P-burg an average 2A team then, eh ?!?

:sssh:

This is my opnion. The 4 state champions last year... Trinity, Lexington Catholic, Russell and Newport Central Catholic. Could Russell beat any of the other 3? If they could, 2A wouldnt be the weakest class. Lexington Catholic was imo the best team last year, Trinity 2nd, Russell 3rd and NCC 4th.

You make some good points in post #32 hearsay, I may have been going on the local 2A district in my area too much. there is Russell who is very good and then not much at all.

That local two district includes the defending 2A champion and a contender to repeat this year. But you are correct the rest of that district does seem to be down. East Carter and Fleming Co were above average teams last year. Both lost alot to graduation and are struggling so far this year. Morgan Co who has been on the rise the last couple of years also lost alot and are struggling with injuries. So you are correct in the fact that as a whole the district is down.

Again, I don't think we can go by who has the strongest "Top 5." It needs to be a top-to-bottom thing. 2A is not doing badly this year.

These arguments can be fruitless and speculative, but fun nevertheless. How about someone figure out some set of criterion we could go by, and then apply it to this season.

...

If someone can figure out a satisfactory criteria, it would be the first time in more than 4 years of being a member here.

Let me also say...when actual past season numbers have shown class 2A with the BEST winning percentage vs. other classes, cries of "weak 2A" continued to persist. And are beginning yet again...LOL

I've come to the conclusion it's something entirely different... 1A fans know 2A has BIGGER schools. Therefore, I've come to the conclusion that 1A has "Class Envy"... (read into that what you will...;) )

You must think Ashland is an average 3A team and P-burg an average 2A team then, eh ?!?

You are absolutely correct, I feel that Prestonsburg is an average 2A team. :thumb:

I didnt think we were comparing the top 5 of 1a vs 2a. Even if we are, I would still take 2a.

That being said. I think Belfry OR Russell, OR Prestonburg beat Beechwood in 04. Granted, that not true every year, but it you compare class by class, I think 2a wins last season, and probably the year before. I COMPLETLY believe this year, which is what this thread is about, 2a can beat 1a.

No respect for 2a football. Belfry or Russell win represent the East this year in 2a, and I think they will give Mercer Co. ( a 5a school, not thier fault) a god game.

Just have some respect guys. I really beleive in 04. Belfry would have played Highland very tight, if not to a victory. Rember Bell Co. should have beat them (had they not had an ineligble player). and Belfry BARELY squeeked by Pburg.

How do people how haven't seen another team play, call out the entire class of 2a? Pretty gross IMO.

Is Hearsay the only voice of unbiased reason? Thank god for the bar KY bar!

You are absolutely correct, I feel that Prestonsburg is an average 2A team. :thumb:

You can't have the second part without the first...or else it means nothing. YOU originally said it, not me...
