You are correct. But it will be interesting to see if SK has addressed there biggest weakness. Defense. Yes I said this team has a weakness with Defense and that's hard to say with a Stower's coached team.

Where I'm headed with that comment is that SK over the past three years has not been able to guard on the perimeter. While they have good guard play. They really lack in the ability to extend the floor defensively.

 

This years team may be able to change that weakness with the addition of Harney and Jones having a year to mature. This team will be able to extend the floor with Gilliam, Harney, Jones and Buckner. All four girls are quick and can flat out pressure the ball so worrying about foul trouble on the perimeter this year shouldn't be as much of a concern.

 

If this team can learn to pressure some of the weaker ball handling teams then they can expect different result. However, they will also have a huge advantage with their inside post play in Meier. They must recognize her in the post and feed her. Not many teams have a post presence that can stop her. Many times last year I would see the guards just stare at her when she had someone pinned behind her. SK is not a great 3 point shooting team and that hasn't changed. You have to respect them but they must feed Meier in the post.

 

I watched SK vs. Scott last year and the difference in the game was the athleticism of Buckner in the mid range game and the fact Scott had no one that could effectively guard Meier, and Niece played and excellent offensive game. The glaring weakness in that game was they had no one that could guard on the perimeter other than Gilliam and Meier.

 

I think the Tremble County loss really showed this glaring weakness. Without being able to extend their defense and pressure a team that didn't have tremendous ball handling. They packed it in and simply allowed Trimble to play their game.

 

If this years version is going to be any different. They are going to have to be able to show they can add a dimension to their game that allows them to create offense thru their defense. They are also going to have to realize the value of the basketball and not jack 3's up every other possession.

SK is adding a high motor player with Harney who can drive to the basket, shoot the three, and plays tough defense. Many of your concerns are answered with this fine addition to the team Watchman.

Watchmen, you are absolutely correct! 1) Buckner is out.... for now. 2) SK didn't and couldn't play pressure D last year. They haven't for a couple years now because of Personnel. They also aren't that great of a 3 pt shooting team even though some think 30-33% makes one a great threat. Your great shooters are nearing 40% or better. And adding Harney does add a tremendous amount to this team. She's tenacious on D, she shoots the ball well and handles the ball real well. Should be interesting in how this team gels.

It was sarcasm, I love the 3 guards who would not, all 3 are classy individuals as well and will play college basketball. The aggravating part is when a coaching staff gets up in front of their peers at a banquet and tells everyone there in the speech that an all region player was asked to come to Simon, blatantly lets everyone know. With their line up they have a shot at the state tournament in my opinion. It just gets old to hear that another girl wants to come to Simon. I really believe that if they are in the 9th region they don't get as many kids, they assume they can have an all star team and win the 8th, I think that has happened one time, and a technical foul helped that one. Had the best team by 20 points plus last year and could not get it done, so it appears they went and got another play to help make it happen.

She lived in the district and was thinking of going to another high school in another county to play with friends and Coach Stowers talked her into staying in the SK district. I feel there is a big difference in recruiting a player from another district/school system to come to your school and talking one into staying home and playing for your school. I've heard this story before and know that it wasn't what it seemed or sounded like.

Watchmen, for what it's worth, I appreciated your earlier post. I have no idea what was so funny or daddy goggle about it.

 

Inside out basketball will absolutely increase 3 point shooting percentage. Always has, always will.

 

Improving post play, and utilizing a Senior capable post player to do that, would only make SK that much more dynamic, versatile, and hard to stop.

 

No matter how good you think you are, there is ALWAYS room to improve defensively. So yes, in general, SK could always improve their perimeter defense. In spite of all their strengths, I agree that this is one area they were not the strongest. I also agree that Jones and Harney can be a big part of that improvement.

I believe your comments are excellent and very accurate. Jones shot over 40% from behind the arc last year and is possibly the best defender (guards) Simon has. It was a mistake for her not to start and see the floor a significant amount last year. Because of the defensive issues and perimeter shooting issues at SK she should be out there a lot. Ally is a great player and should be the major part of the offense she is. But her weakness has been defense in the past. If Ally has worked on her defense, Jones has another year of growth and sees the floor a lot, add in Harney; and you should see a significant defensive improvement and perimeter shooting over last year.

With Harney coming in and Jones a year older, what's the starting 5 look like now and who plays 6, 7, and 8? And is Buckner comes back, what's that do to the lineup?

You also have stamper back. She looks like she has grown and started 8 games last year filling in for an injured player.

So Gillium, Harney, Stamper, Jones, Meier, Neace, Buckner, Harmeyer will be the top 8 when everyone is back?
