Do you think this 2016 squad is better and deeper than the 2013 team?

 

I think they are deeper. Better is debatable. I know some are calling this the best team ever at BG. I know of people who also feel like they wouldn't skip a beat with some of their backups in the game. I don't know of a good way to compare the 2013 and 2016 teams. Both are dominant teams and I'll be shocked if 2016 doesn't win it all rather convincingly. This would have been a great year for BG/Trinity. Trinity may beat them but not by 3 TDs.

You all know how big of a Purple fan I am. Coached in the Purple League back in the day and at the Junior High a few years (great teams - never lost).

 

As far as the Trinity discussion, which I love as much as it hurts to admit it, Trinity would get the nod the majority of years. I think in the last 10 years the Purples would get 4 wins and 6 losses. If not 4-6 it would be very close to that. The 3 year run of undefeated teams with Devin Hayes and Nacarius Fant I believe the Purples would have won those 3. Perhaps this years team would be the 4th win vs the Rocks. What makes our team so good this year is not just our skills (best overall skill players we have had in Payne, Caruthers, Wilson, Kenner) but our offensive and defensive line.

 

Unfortunately, the stars just did not line up for them to play this year. The Purples will be really good the next three seasons but I don't think (I know) they will not be as good as this year because of the O & D lines will drop off a bit.

 

Can Trinity win against them this year? Absolutely. Can the Purples beat the Rocks this year? Absolutely.

 

Can Trinity beat Purples next season? Absolutely Can Purples beat Trinity next season? Probably not

 

Here is my view of this season:

No way is Trinity better at the skills positions this year than the Purples.

Offensive and Defensive line play is a push at best

Depth on O and D line: Trinity wins

Athletic defensive backs that can make a play: Advantage Purples

Coaching: Push at best, but I give the nod to BGHS

 

2016 matchup: Purples 35 Trinity 28

 

Again, all guesses and speculation but fun to think about

But I do have to call you out on this... why do you give the edge to Bowling Green against one of the most successful coaches in KY HS History?

 

As great of a Coach Wallace is.. and he is a great coach..and as good as BG's staff is...and it is a very good staff

That 2013 team was sensational. It's the only BG team that I think I can say without hesitation was the #1 team in Kentucky that season.Loved watching them work.

If Bowling Green and Trinity were to play, it would be a fascinating game because I really think that right now these are the best 2 teams in the state at making in game adjustments and both would need to do that in that game.

 

BG ran 53 plays vs St X. A third were rushes and they were not successful in moving the chains. I don't think they would be any better in this category vs T. However, similar to how H tried to attack T, I do think BG could exploit the edges and make T tackle in space and cause them some problems. Enough to make it a game and well inside of 3 TDs.

 

I don't think the BG D would shut the T offense down either, but would make them try to earn all their points.

 

I think T would have the advantage in the kicking game because I think they focus on that more.

 

Could BG win? Sure in a 1 game scenario! But T would be the favorite.

As good as those Bowling Green teams were, I think only 2013 would get the nod from me. The 2011 Bowling Green team was magnificent and beat most teams handily. They embarrassed teams in 5A that entered the year thinking they had a shot. But that Trinity team won a national title. Whereas Bowling Green beat X 28-20, Trinity obliterated them 41-6 and 42-6. That team rolled through the best out of Cincinnati and Nashville. They made most teams other than Cincy St X look ridiculous. No one really touched them.

 

2012 wasn't quite as dominating, but still beat all those same teams except Moeller. They had to survive a close test in the postseason against X, but blew them out in the regular season again while Bowling Green won by a TD. I think there's potential Bowling Green could have won that year, but I would think Trinity would have had the edge. Mostly because Bowling Green was a remarkably young team that year and ramping into that 2013 heavy hitter.

 

Those would have been fun games though. Just to have this discussion is yet another example of Bowling Green's stature throughout the state. They are truly among the elite of elite.

Completely understand where you are coming from ATLCat. Nothing but respect for Trinity Coaching Staff. My bias may be kicking in but just knowing the staff that Wallace has put together at BG and their incredible run over the past several years; since 1990 the Purples are 305-49 (a few of those losses are to the Rocks) and in the last six seasons they are 76-3. May be a homer pick but I would put BGHS coaching staff up against anyone.

2013 - QB - Devin Hayes - arguably the best BG has had.

WR - Nacarius Fant - NO Question the best WR BG has had. Mr. Football

Other strong players - Blue Tisdale and Blake Pillow

 

2016 - QB - Clark Payne - not sure what else the young man can do - he's been that solid and some say is THE key to the Purples offense this year.

RB - Jamale Carothers - arguably the best BG has had.

WR - Deangelo Wilson - WR - I'd take him at #2 for BG all-time.

Other strong players - Luke Brown WR, Ziyon Kenner WR, Garret Strickler TE

 

2013 - Through 7 games, they scored 365 points (have to remember the 91 pt game vs Logan Co :isurrender:) and gave up 113

 

2016 - Through 7 games, they have scored 344 points and given up 61, but the 2013 schedule was a bit tougher.

 

I agree with @PurplePride92 that this team is deeper, but better? I'm not there yet. The 2013 team won at St X, at McCallie and Blackman at home. The 2016 team beat X at home, but don't play those TN teams and that's where I get torn.

Question is. Is Trinity Big up front if so they beat BG soundly if not a close game.

While the team speed may be comparable, the biggest difference in the two teams resides in the quality and the depth of the big fellas. Despite having a Division I RB, BGHS had a hard time running the ball vs. St. X. Trinity controlled the X game in the trenches.

 

It's nice for BGHS to be in the discussion but the only big trophy being given out will be at the end of the 5A playoffs. If the Purples collect that prize, the goals of the 2016 team will have been met.

In three of the DeAngelo Wilson's four seasons (and I'm projecting this one) they're going to throw for more yards than they ran. And in those three years, it really wasn't even close to balanced. (The one where rushing took precedence was the gap year under Campbell Gott, and they ran for just over 100 yards more than they threw - still a highly successful aerial attack.) By contrast, in NONE of Moore's four years did they throw for more than they ran. One year it was more than double the amount, and in another it was almost four times as much on the ground. It's a completely different offense. Steelman and Moore were the foundation of the offense that Bowling Green runs today. Wilson has had the fortune of playing in a system that is fully formed, and on top of that, a program that is fully formed and established as one of the most elite of elite programs in the state regardless of class. Heck, DL didn't even have the benefit of the platoon system. He played on both sides of the ball.

 

I know you said high school receiver, and that's a nod to the fact that DL was clearly the superior college prospect, but I am firmly of the belief if you plucked Moore from the timeline and placed him in this current system, he would put up beyond ridiculous numbers for the Purples. His name is in the KHSAA record books for his senior season yardage. I don't think Wilson is going to get there. No knock on DeAngelo, who is phenomenal, both on the gridiron and basketball court. But Moore's my #2 WR at BG for certain.

I take nothing away from what you say and value your opinion, which this one is mine. My words are not to put DL Moore down, but to raise Deangelo Wilson up. It is not his fault at when or where in the timeline he comes along. It is his opportunity to excel in the system that exists these past 4 years and that's exactly what he has done. Whom the better college prospect is is not for this conversation because it's "who is the best BGHS WR". A WR in my book is judged by the passes he catches, the chains he moves, the most YAC (yards after catch), and the most TDs period. No contest here. Deanglo will have have more of all for his career. I'm as sorry for DL Moore as I can be about the offensive scheme, but that's water under the bridge.

 

In last years Championship game, Pulaski County was up 7-0 and likely outplaying BG at this early part of the second quarter. A simple screen pass to Wilson and he jukes 6 to 7 Maroons and takes it to the house. That my friend was outright skill displayed at the highest stage when the Purples needed it most - you certainly wouldn't discount that. Deangelo Wilson will I hope be credited with playing for 3 State Championship teams (he really didn't contribute on the great 2013 team only earning 1 catch for 56 yards and a TD), but this year and last year he has been instrumental on those teams. It hurts me more than you to say Mr Moore never won a State Championship. Both players were intragal parts of their respective teams. Not doubting that.

 

I realize I have seen Deangelo play more games than DL Moore and I am likely biased on that. But a rough look at the numbers show TODAY:

DL Moore : 91 Total Catches 1,818 yards and 16 TDs

Deangelo Wilson: 117 Catches 1,807 yards and 28 TDs

 

In conclusion, I have no problem with anyone saying DL Moore is your #2 WR. But he's not mine. AND, he never made a catch like the one illustrated above. We can agree to disagree.
