Actually, I think he can play in the NBDL for a year, which is my bet if I were to wager.

I believe since OJ the cashcow has moved in, the schedule for HHS will significantly change as GIAT has posted. I'd say that very soon you'll see the HHS team on ESPN much like Oden's was last season. Good for the kids from Huntington, they will get national exposure that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise, regardless of how good Patterson is, or isn't according to some.

 

 

The schedule won't change much if they have contracts for the games. Most schools have their Varsity schedules done and with contracts.

The article in The Independent indicated that Dwaine Barnes has moved back to Huntington.

One of the disheartening things about this is that those who claim the footall championship is being watered down will defend a school's right to establish all-star teams with transfers and player's "moving in." They will win a more "watered down" championship in my mind than anything close to the football titles being watered down.

I think Rambler knows that and I hope he's correct and Mayo does attend Marshall for a year, and if I were on the Big Green Staff, I'd attend every game I could. I have my doubts about his Marshall possibility, but what a boost for that program if it were to happen. Something similar to the top H.S. football player coming there a few years back! Moss, I believe his name was!

For the sake of this young man, lets all hope that he emerges from this circus with a better head on his shoulders than Moss. Lets not forget that prior to ending up at Marshall, Moss was dismissed from both Notre Dame and Flordia State (What must one do to get dismissed from FSU, must be an exceptionally heinous act.) Furthermore its not like Moss has behaved like a gentleman since turning pro.

I guess it is more the whole process that athletics are moving into. North College Hill won 2 state championships and I really don't remember anyone devaluing their championships. I do remember listening to some talk radio and 1 NCH alumni who said he couldn't get behind and support this mercenary team and be proud of their championships because they moved in to win a championship.

 

And yet, in almost the same breath, we are calling the football championships watered down although somewhere around 1% of more kids playing football in the state will be state champions.

 

I really don't see how schools get excited and proud of state championships that are made up as all-star teams.

Strike-3, I was only pointing out the level of talent, and some would argue that Mr. Mayo is a level higher as a high schooler than even Mr. Moss was. With regards to his trail to Marshall if Mayo actually attended, it is even more scrutinized than Moss' at the time. However, to say that Moss' presence in the football program didn't elevate Marshall to national prominence is simply errant. Who's to say that Mayo couldn't do the same for the basketball program?

Perhaps I have changed my stance in recent years on the subject. I think that so many kids/parents move to "benefit" the kid, either by having them play for "better" programs or to make them more likely to get some facetime. Perhaps it's to get more notoriety and to get them looks from colleges, etc. I have no idea. But in the case of Mayo, no matter where he went, whether in Ashland, Ky or Cincinnati, or Huntington, or L.A. he was going to have the Barnum and Bailey effect. So, if he stayed at Rose Hill for instance, from his 7th grade year on, would the subsequent state titles have been tainted? I don't feel like they would have been. I'm sure that I can't make a blanket statement, but I'd guess that the overwhelming majority of schools have transfers, and things just aren't like they were when most of us in this forum were in school. High School sports are so much more publicized, there is so much more at stake with higher education on the line from time to time, so I doubt these days we're in will ever revert to a more "loyal" day. Media and the like haven't made things much easier. Of course, we would more than likely not be having this discussion in this particular forum if high school sports weren't considerably more significant than in "our day".

To say this whole situation is an absolute joke would have to be an understatement. If true and If W.V. allow Mayo to play I would have to think whatever governing body they have there ranks right up there with our own KHSAA.

He stays at Rose Hill or anywhere for 6 years, no way are they tainted in my eyes. He worked and stayed committed. But to move here one year, move here 2 years later and ends up somewhere else at the end, I think taints your career and accomplishments.

 

High school success to me is about reaching long-term successes and not collecting talent for one year and having success at the end of that one year.
