Has X released any news about their 2017 schedule? I know they still have BG on there.

They are always struggling to find games. Success + lack of quality local competition + overwhelming distance to many parts of the state makes it so challenging. I don't envy Coach Haywood in that regard at all. Here's hoping they land two opponents.

Belfry really is in a tight bind for these reasons.

 

The other side of the coin is the teams that would be worth playing all are being heavily pursued by teams that make more sense to them geographically. I know Belfry pursued Pulaski County very hard for a game but Coach Hines didn't want to make the trip when he had other options much closer to Somerset for a Home and Home.

 

Teams like Danville, LCA, and the Lexington Area 6A Schools make a lot of sense (Belfry has Bryan Station scheduled), but all of those teams are also being pursued by local programs.

 

Conversely, many WV schools don't want to play Belfry due to their Playoff System. Belfry is simply much better than all of the 1A and 2A teams and those schools don't want the loss. The WV 3A (Biggest Class) Schools make sense from a competitive standpoint, but with Belfry being a smaller class school it is a liability to schedule them because a win doesn't maximize their points, and even then it is not even a sure thing.

 

@Watusi may disagree.... but IMHO I think it is time to bite the bullet and start the Mingo Central rivalry. The Miners won the WV 2A Title this year and Head Coach Yogi Kinder is retiring. As long as Kinder was there you could rest assured Haywood would not schedule them for various reasons, but with him gone I think this may be the most efficient way to fill a game on the schedule that brings in big gate money.

Sounds like maybe Cabell Midland and Belfry came to a resolution to re-new and that belfry may have added a team from the land of the Maple Leafs

Cabell was trying to make that game happen but had to juggle their schedule. If they finalized it I haven't heard, but it is possible.

 

The Canadian team is a possibility, but the Pirates would much rather find a 2 year home and home with a KY team.

The Canadian team surprised me

 

I anticipated it would be the same rag-tag band of misfits Johnson Central has crushed in the past.

 

Apparently this team played both Cincy LaSalle and Pickerington Central very close last year. Pick. Central went to the D-1 Semi's and only beat this Canadian team by a TD.

I saw where Eagles Landing Christian down here in Atlanta was looking for a game and had two September dates open. Not sure if they line up... but ELCA might be worth calling. They are the two time defending (maybe even 3x) Georgia 1A Private Champs.

 

Long haul, but they have a ton of money so it might help make it feasible.

@ATLCat, what about a meet in the middle game kinda like Corbin and Mayfield did. That was fun for the fans, but not so sure it was for the teams, but good competition nonetheless.

When in Rome I believe.... I think they play by American Rules in America and Canadian in Canada.

 

This particular team is actually a Prep School. So not sure if that changes anything for them, they may actually exclusively play American.

Simple answer: Canada Prep and North Prep both play standard NFHS 11-man rules.

 

Long answer: Canadian HS's play by two different rules. It depends on the province. Most follow Canadian rules (as does the CIS, their NCAA-equivalent), however British Columbia plays NFHS rules. Some provinces don't even sponsor football for their schools (maritimes, mostly), though some sponsor flag football.

 

Ontario uses Canadian rules, though, technically, these two 'schools' aren't really a part of the OFSAA, and ONLY play American teams. Primarily from Ohio and Michigan. They're actually really good, too. And since they only play American teams in America, they play exclusively with 11-man rules.

Add Royal Imperial Collegiate to list, with Canada Prep Academy and Football North, of barnstorming Canadian programs that play exclusively USA teams. A 4th (Hill Academy) tried to get off the ground last year, but did not. Not sure if they will in 2017.

Belfry was arguably one of the top five teams in KY regardless of class last year, and I do not see them being at that elite level.

 

With that said Belfry is still going to be very solid. They return some studs at the skill spots and had a ton of depth last season across the board.

 

Though I don't expect Belfry to be at the dominant level of the 14 or 15 squads, I think you will see a lot of comparisons to that 2013 Championship team.
