Dabo Swinney:It's so easy to say we have a race problem, but we got a sin problem"

Featured Replies

I HATE when people bring MLK into discussions because if MLK was alive he'd be on the sideline with Kap taking a knee. Anyone who thinks otherwise only post his quotes on MLK day to look good.

...and he'd be public enemy #1 for saying things like "rioting is the language of the unheard."

What I said before. Not fully off, but it is a reach. Kap said cops are willfully murdering African Americans with no repercussions. Since that time his original statement has been ignored and massaged into "Kap was simply highlighting the social/racial inequities which exist and he has sparked a national conversation," which is more in-line with what Dabo said. And yes, that is a conversation worth having.

Yeah its also somewhat forgotten he wore police pig socks and a fidel castro shirt, but now his message is portrayed as something different.

Gotcha.

The Bible tells us that yet it's been a problem forever and is still a problem. I'm not sure what that fact tells us other than it's not a new problem nor one that is easily corrected.

That's because we all have that sinful nature. It's something the Holy Spirit helps me with everyday, but even then it's still a daily struggle.

Yep.

I agree. I think he'd be hated in today's society.

I agree with what Dabo said and thought it was well done. I don't have an issue with CK staging a peaceful protest. I agree with the core of his message if it's blacks are not treated equally in this country. He hurt his cause with the socks and general comments of police killing innocent blacks. Facts do not support those comments and anyone looking for a reason to ignore the message has it. I also believe a different method of protest would have been better because again he's given people a reason to ignore the message. Some will always ignore the message not matter what protest was done however something as controversial as this magnifies it. I think the goal should be to get as many to the table for dialogue as possible and this method has fallen very short of that. It's not CK's fault but at this point does that matter? I say all of this while admitting I don't really know what a better option would be. I do like the players that have chosen to raise a fist instead of kneeling. It enough of a gesture to bring attention but can't be construed as a sign of disrespect.

I wish I knew the easy the answer but as long as people have a reason to bury their heads in the sand to avoid talking about the tough issues they will. I really hope in the end this whole things brings about at minimum the beginning of change.

OK, I'll ask a stupid question. Is there anyone who could champion the cause today that folks would get behind like MLK? Perhaps that's a stupid question. Maybe different times and circumstances and a silly comparison on my part.

Original quote from CK:

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

We all read into it what want. I read into it NOT that ALL police were killing without repercussions. I think many folks question SOME of the high-profile cases and the lack of perceived justice and the perception/belief of the "why." CK believes it too often is a result of skin color.

So I don't see any softening of the original message. I also see the original message , minus hot-button words like "oppressed", as saying what Dabo says. Treat everyone the same.

No.

If your goal is to foster discussion I will disagree with Dabo in saying a better way is to have a press conference. ZERO chance that gets the national attention.

With all of the downsides to how THIS was done it still has done more to bring the issue to a point of at least taking a step back to consider the veracity of it.

On MLK from another thread:

"Too bad he's dead. We'll never know so his thoughts on how things are now don't matter in the slightest."

In 2016 people would not get behind MLK. They would have jumped ship from him totally once he showed up in Ferguson, Missouri.

PC response. I'm not feeling PC today.

It's easy to say love your neighbor but look around - who are your neighbors? I bet they look just like you. One of the biggest problems with race relations, IMO, is that blacks and whites aren't neighbors. For the most part, we don't eat, drink, pray, play together in the same community. Yeah, we work together and attend sports functions together but at the end of the day, black people go back to their black neighborhoods and white people go back to their white neighborhoods. Blended communities do exist but they are the exception; not the rule in America.

That's more of an economic issue than blacks choosing a black neighborhood. The majority of people live where you can afford to live regardless of color.

I agree, even though there has been a lot of negative to this protest. It has definitely caught the attention of America and has caused a lot of media attention. Don't they say there is no such thing as negative press?
